About the Author
Robert Bissett has been specializing in Monolithic dome design for over ten years. He has a degree in architecture from Washington State University, Summa Cum Laude, 1975. He has a degree in science from the United States Air Force Academy, 1967. In 1972, after five years as a pilot, two in Viet Nam flying helicopters and Caribous, he earned his FAA Airline Transport Rating. When not designing domes, Bob is an artist, author, blogger and teacher. He did the design development and working drawings for Dome of a Home in Pensacola Beach, FL which survived hurricane Ivan and was the subject of a TV special. He also did the design development and working drawings for the largest, high-end dome home, forty thousand square feet on four floors, part of a five dome complex.

This is the only book I have found which gives exact details on how to computer design and create workable plans for a dome, especially a concrete dome from the Monolithic folks (purveyors of the coolest domes on the planet), using free software.I have been designing dome floorplans by hand for well over a decade, as I could find no floorplan software which was affordable and worked (I am not spending the ridiculous amounts most people want for 3D or CAD software when a free version can do almost as well, in some cases better). I was intrigued by the possibilities of using SketchUp when it came along, but could not find information which related specifically enough to domes or circular buildings.This book is a tutorial designed specifically for using SketchUp, a free 3D program, (and other programs) to not only create a good floorplan for a dome, but also to be able to create a good 3D model and export the files to other software to create drawings for actual construction. It delivers quite well on that. It does a very good job of describing how to create and manipulate your floorplan using certain features of SketchUp. It is quite detailed on the creation of the model, spacing and measurements, tricks for making the model exact enough to export to CAD programs, making wood or metal framing fit with curved dome walls, window and door spaces, wall placement, modeling layers of the dome to get accurate measurements, and so on. It is precise and extremely useful in creating even a simple 3D model of a dome to scale.It is not a tutorial on everything SketchUp can do. It is not a tutorial on every piece of 3D software out there. It is not for people who already know how to use SketchUp to a high level. It is not for 3D artists and professionals (unless you want some quick shortcuts and don't like to reinvent the wheel). It is certainly not for people who are not computer literate or conversant with current computer technology, free software, or the internet.Most of the complaints in reviews of this book are off-topic or related to unrealistic expectations or the inability to read. There is nothing anywhere on the Amazon page which says anything about including a CD of software. Free software is delivered almost exclusively by way of the internet these days, and this has been the case for over a decade. Expectations so far out of touch with reality should not be the basis for a review.The fact of the matter is that this book does a very good job of showing how to design a good dome floorplan/drawing/model and export those files to other software to create good working drawings. That is exactly what it purports to do, and it does it, period. It is exactly the kind of tutorial information I was looking for, and I am very happy with it.If you are interested in designing a dome, want to create good dome floorplans, or even a fairly accurate drawing or model of your dome in 3D, this book will show you one way to achieve that with software freely available on the net. I am extremely pleased the author has created it, I'm glad I bought it, and I highly recommended it.
it was an interesting read..really allows one to see what goes in to the design of these type structures.
The book is very technical so anyone buying it should have some idea of the aspects of the building trade, in regards to drawings, codes, etc. Other than that it was an excellent book, a good resource and well laid out. I would definitely recommend it.
I am still trying to digest this manual. It is highly technical and requires more computer competence than I posses. If you have extensive computer training you should have no problems.

Bought this book hoping to cut thru the hours required to learn/utilize a software program. First thing author requests the reader to do is download about 5 free online programs, then proceeds to tell you how to use these programs like you know how to already. Very disappointing, as if I wanted to learn a free software program, could have done so without buying this book. Save your $$.
Its a good book to help you design a house using free online software. It tells you where to go to get it.
I don't know anything about these houses, but based on what others have said,these things are aerodynamic and can resist tornadoes. I hope to build one soonas the weather in the USA is extreme due to the Global Warming that is going on.I've already found more books and more info from some of the places I've seen inthe book, these should help out with actually building it.
