I heard about this book in a Buzzfeed article where they interviewed the author. I was very excited to get my hands on a copy as I grew up loving and collecting these books. I was a huge fan of the Baby Sitter's Club before moving on to Christopher Pike and R.L. Stine's Fear Street and I even shop on Ebay for those classics from time to time. This book is colorful and pleasing to look at and I enjoyed seeing all of the old covers of the books of my childhood. Each chapter covered a different genre of YA lit from romance to career to my personal favorite, horror. I did notice while reading some typos, etc. which bothered my OCD nature. I did enjoy the interview with Christopher Pike as he was one of my favorite author's as a pre teen. I still have a soft spot in my heart for Remember Me. I hated the ending of the book. It just stopped with the horror chapter. No conclusion, no thoughts being tied together, nothing about how the YA lit of our childhood's affected us or YA lit today. I was thinking to myself am I missing twenty pages here? While a nice trip down memory lane I am upset I spent $15 on this book. I feel that it was rushed at the end and I would have rather had a bigger dive into the horror YA books.

The book brought back lots of memories. It also succinctly argued all the points many of us from this generation of coming-of-age readers (some through personal reflection, so no doubt through years of therapy) have concluded about mean girls, exclusive friend clubs, and unhealthy premature obsessions with relationships. This book would make an excellent reference in a pop culture class or a pick for a fun book club. I hope there's a sequel, or at least a collection of essays from readers inspired by this book in the works for the future :)

This book is tons of fun, especially if you grew up in the 80s and 90s and enjoyed this genre. If that's you, you will experience quite a few "Aww" and "Ohhh, I remember that" moments. Buy it.

A great way to revisit old childhood/teenage favorites, acknowledge our warm fuzzies for them, and also admit that sometimes, they weren't all that great. This isn't a hard-hitting evaluation of all the problems in these books, though. And that's ok.Even if you weren't hung up on Sweet Valey High, the BSC, Nancy Drew, or Fear Street - you will almost certainly find a book or series you knew and loved mentioned within these pages. I think I am the only one in my friend group who tried the Camp Sunnyside Friends series, but it was mentioned. Several of the late '70s and early '80s teen YA fluff that my older sister owned (and I therefore borrowed) came up.If you feel any nostalgia for these books or like podcasts/websites that reminisce about these books - check out Paperback Crush.

There was a time before "Twilight", "The Fault in our Stars" and "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" when YA literature was simple and formulaic but it was also very, very popular with teenagers. This book provides an entertaining look back at the books that children of the '70s, '80s & '90s couldn't get enough of. Even though I'm a straight hetero guy, I did read these types of books when I was a kid because it felt like teen movies or TV in a book and reading this extensive oral history, complete with color photos and snarky commentary, took me back to my elementary & middle school days. It's definitely worth checking out!

I really enjoyed this book! It brought back so many great memories of the wild and wackky books I read growing up. If you grew up buying Archway paperbacks for 3.99 or less, I'd recommend this book!

Honestly, this book is amazing. If you were a reader at all in the ’90s (or the ’80s), I strongly recommend it. Moss gives us a humorous and in-depth history of beloved teen literature from the 1980s and 1990s, full of trivia and pop culture fun. Loved it!

I read it cover to cover over a relaxing weekend and it was a fun read. I've shared it with my friends; it's nice to leave out and someone can pick it up and read a section while we wait for food or something. I think this makes a great gift.

I love Ellen DeGeneres's work so reading her books was a no brainer. I read her book, The Funny Thing Is... when it released about ten years ago. I can't say that I remember a ton about the book but I do remember that I enjoyed it. Enough to want to read any future books of hers which leads to Seriously... I'm Kidding. If you're going into Seriously... I'm Kidding expecting a memoir, well, it's not your typical memoir. I'd say this is a series of essays and I use the term essays loosely (I do love this structure here) that can be described as half memoir half inspiration/motivational with humor on every page. Yes, Ellen talks about her time working on American Idol and whether or not Ellen and Portia will have kids, as well as why. Stuff like that. For me though, there's really nothing in this book I didn't already know. This wasn't disappointing to discover as I was more curious about Ellen's delivery of the humor which I'll get to in a moment. But ultimately, this book was more inspiring and funny than a behind the scenes look at Ellen's life and/or any issues she's overcome over the past few years.Aside from the memoir side of things, there's a ton of advice on self esteem, self worth, and positivity. I was expecting Ellen to touch on these topics and I was expecting positivity to be the theme of the book no matter what since that's what Ellen is all about. I didn't realize that the extent of her inspirational words would be so large. These are all good things but I did think, "Am I reading the introduction to a self help book?" at times in the beginning of the book. Now worth noting is how funny this book is. There's humor in every chapter but some chapters are about absolutely nothing significant and exist solely for a punchline. Even so, everything Ellen says leads to a joke. Everything. There is not a moment of rest with the comedy here. It's very fast paced and goofy. You don't get a break from the funny. There's barely time to recover from the previous joke before another one comes. It's a lot of funny. Which you either love, can appreciate, or don't find this approach to comedy works for you. I appreciate it. Which made this a very quick read. The best part? It's all Ellen. There's a writing team behind her talk show and of course she's the head of that team but her book is a totally different animal and a more solitary creative experience so it's refreshing to hear Ellen's voice and only Ellen's voice in this medium. So, would I recommend this book? If you're looking to learn more about Ellen, nothing serious of course, just watch her talk show to get it straight from her in real time. If you've got two or three hours to kill and are looking for more laughs from Ellen, go right ahead.

I got this audio book mostly because it's read by Ellen DeGeneres. I love her, I think she's hilarious, and so I thought that she'd be great to listen to as if she were putting on a show on CD. This is not the case.Unfortunately, as much as I love Ellen, her audio book sounds stilted like, well, she's READING it. The jokes are a little like jokes you plant in a speech that has a monotonous edge to it that totally ruins the entire thing. The entire book wasn't like that, but the lead up to the punch line falls flat when she can't get that "I'm reading you a funny joke but I have to be careful I don't spit in the microphone so I'm going to read with one tone of voice for places I might spit whilst laughing" out of her voice! It's so frustrating! The book itself was a compilation of seemingly random chapters, some very short and some long. There's a long period of silence for a `meditation' period as well as one chapter she says `hey, look in the printed copy because we're gonna skip reading them here' (this is the `text lingo' chapter). Luckily, I had access to the book, but it's kind of a waste of your time to try and track it down. There's also a chapter that is all about sounds which is perfect for the audio book and not so much for the printed version.Plus, it's short. I mean, REALLY short. Like we're talking three hours short. And I honestly didn't like it enough to listen to it again. It is definitely a woman-empowering book and some of the chapters I laughed out loud but most I really wanted to skip.I'd borrow it from the library before you decide to buy the audio book. But a decent read nonetheless.

I'm a big Ellen Degeneres fan, but this book left me wanting. I watch her show every day and reading this book was like re-watching all of her monologues. Don't get me wrong. She is quite possibly the funniest person around. I laugh out loud at her antics. She rules daytime talk TV. (I personally believe Oprah left TV because of Ellen. She couldn't best Ellen's higher ratings.) I will continue watching her show and maybe I will try reading another book. Maybe I'll try one of her audio books narrated by her. I have always preferred watching her. Sometimes what makes her so funny is the 'way' she says it along with the look on her face.

Every one on the planet knows who Ellen is and how funny she is. This book is everything you would expect it to be. Have to say though, at times I wasn't sure of she was taking the piss or not. I sure don't believe most of it any way. I think it was all for laughs, maybe I'm wrong, but at least the laughs were there. If you're looking for her personal life and 'real-life' moments, keep looking. You will be sorely disappointed if you're looking for a glimpse into her life or what makes her tick. This book is nothing but laughs and some insanity. That's entertainment though.I flew through this pretty fast, because it was hilarious. It was exactly what I needed at the time.3.5/5

I'm a HUGE Ellen fan! After hearing her mention books she published in the past and making references to them, I decided to check them out online. Once on Amazon, I used the "Look Inside" function and was able to read a little of the book and it made me laugh... so I decided to purchase this book. I was happy to find out she's just as funny as an author as she is a tv talk show host! I love this book and whenever I need to cheer myself up or have a good laugh, I pick her book up and start reading my favorite sections again! If you love Ellen (or even just good old comedy), you'll love this book! Give it a try!

“It hooked me at the first page!” “Ripped from the headlines!” “I couldn’t put it down!”Hey wait a minute. Isn’t this supposed to be a review of an economics book? It is, and for me all those exclamations are true. In spite of the fact that I usually think economics is opaque and boring, I found this book to be positively riveting.Like a lot of people, I’m worried about what’s going on in today’s world. The Arab Spring never bloomed; Occupy Wall Street petered out; the upcoming US election seems mired in chaos. We’re supposed to have recovered from the 2008 recession, but most new jobs can’t pay the bills. Every year breaks a record for world’s hottest, but certain political and corporate leaders still deny the existence of man-made climate change. Our population is getting older, poorer, and deeper in debt. What to do about the rising number of immigrants threatens many nations. So when Diane Rehm interviewed Paul Mason about his book, I decided to buy it. I wanted to hear more about his take on why we’re in this situation and what we can do about it.Mason begins by reviewing humankind’s turbulent economic history: feudalism, industrial capitalism, the rise and destruction of the labor movement, the booms and busts of neoliberalism, the phenomenon of today’s “precariat.” These are the stressed-out people forced to work two jobs, who have lost or will never get a pension, who are acutely aware of how monopolies, outsourcing, or their company moving overseas make his or her job extremely precarious. Many workers are expected to be “at work” on their smartphones even when traveling or at home, and—even worse—are forced to “live the dream of the firm they work for.” In spite of our rising productivity, it’s now clear that actual wages are in decline, except for the 1%.Mason then takes a look at how capitalism evolved in the last 200 years. It was mind-expanding for me to see how economic systems evolve and change just like human beings do. Today’s capitalism, the author points out, is in its fifth great wave. It’s trembling on the edge of becoming something new: postcapitalism. Why is this happening? The answer, basically, is because our planet has to meet several great challenges it never faced before: climate change, ageing, the information network, and massive immigration. Business as usual won’t be able to meet these challenges. So what will? What does this new mutation of capitalism look like? Mason says we’re already seeing it through models like the non-profit Wikipedia, Creative Commons, and Open Source. These share a communal nature, “free to use, but impossible to grab, own, and exploit.” Because of the unprecedented availability of free information on the internet, people are able to form artisanal local businesses, publish e-books, join global communities, share videos, get the equivalent of a free college degree. Information, one of the most valuable commodities available to human beings, isn’t scare anymore, but free to all.Like any great novel, this book builds and builds into an explosive climax. Using the nitty-gritty facts of history and economics, Mason reveals what postcapitalism can mean to us and our future. There’s tons more in in this book that I can’t even begin to deal with here. Whenever I read a book I think I’m going to review, I jot down notes: what grabs me, what new thing I learn, how it coincides with what I’ve noticed in the world and why it bothers me or gives me hope. For this book, I took six pages of notes. It’s hard to review a book in which you struggle to assimilate a new idea when, on the next page, the author is already using the new idea as the foundation for yet another new idea. This book isn’t an easy read, but boy is it an exhilarating ride! At the end—when we finally get the answer to the question “who’s going to save us?”—I actually yelled Yay!--review by Veronica Dale, author of Blood Seed,

I will leave it to others who are more invested in seriously reviewing books to provide a summary and commentary of this work. I really enjoyed reading this book, but believe the title is a bit misleading. The substance of the book is about where we find ourselves now and how we got to this point; less about some future that is still largely unknowable. Mason's analysis and insights are what make this book amazing, and he has a gift for clearly explaining some pretty complicated issues (without dumbing anything down). The last chapter of the book is much less successful, which I kind of expected, given that nobody can really have their arms around a collective future that is contingent on so many significant variables. This is definitely worth your time to read, and I feel like I need to re-read this book in a couple of months to pick up what I missed on the first round.

The issue of postcapitalism has to be seen from two angles: the inherent dynamic, if any, of a system moving beyond itself, and the choice/decision of those in the system to change or abolish it completely. In the final analysis it is a speculative guess that the current system stuck in its neo-liberal dystopia has the seeds for a transition to something else. We should remain wary of such claims because while they can offer insights into the dynamics of capitalism we can more safely predict that if the system tends to transcend itself those who stand to profit will reestablish it.The book nonetheless contains much to reckon with and is refreshingly eclectic in a spread of ideas which may or may not amount to confirmation of thesis. At the end however we seem to return to postcapitalism done the old fashioned way, a revolution, which is a choice/decision to operate not according to economic deterministic logic, but the logic of values set in advance to create a system where people are not subjected to the oblivion chosen for them by gangs of thugs called 'capitalists', and their organ grinder's monkey, the economist.Economists specialize in looking past values to what a system does, and how it will undergo noble intentions, but we are arriving at the point where the whole game has to perform according to those values or be judged obsolete. We have burnt out a whole planet in the name of capitalism's 'successes', but must notice that after all of that the system now trends toward the abolition of middle classes. To say nothing of the imminent climate crisis.Still, the cogency of the author's many speculative 'wild goose chases' might be useful for leftists if they can hope to ride the momentum of the system itself toward the phase of 'post...'.

Paul Mason mixes historical perspective with analysis of our current global economic system. Throw in terminology used by economists and political scientists and this book can definitely challenge the reader. I found myself wishing for more concrete suggestions for how we will manage the transition to post-capitalism but he is clear from the start that he is not suggesting specific answers so much as suggesting a roadmap for the transition. Very thought provoking.

If you're going to read one book about our future, this should be it...clear history of capitalism and roadmap for a better tomorrow.

The book has a very clear and coherent train of thought that presents some interesting arguments, providing more than enough material to reinforce the arguments.I would recommend taking your time going through the book, absorb the information given in the initial chapters to help with thw later onesAll in all a great read

The author's Marxist commitments make a lot of this book feel a bit strained, and the quality of the analysis was extremely uneven. However, there are some valuable insights to be found, and those same ideological commitments prevent this from being just another book repeating the same truisms about the future.

I liked the first part of the book as the author described how he entered medicine and his internship at Cook County filled with idealism only to be faced with the reality of patient care and poor to no support from the medical staff. See one, do one, teach one is a reality in medical education even today. He goes into great detail about his political involvement as a resident and the functioning of the hospital which I found boring. I would have enjoyed the book more if he had told more about the people that he worked with, both patients and staff.

This is another look at a grand institution. I had some great opportunities in my early training years to shadow in the Trauma Unit. I was quickly made aware that it wasn't the "HI TECH" equipment (there was none), it was the practitioners who manned the room that made the unit so great. I also got a taste, as a paramedic, of the ED when I again, did clinical rotations many many years ago....I never experienced the 300+ patients waiting for care and getting the best.... I added this to my previous read HOSPITAL which looked at CCH as well.

Dr. David Ansell has written a compelling autobiographical inside look of his own personal journey in becoming a doctor at Cook County hospital. If you have ever been an intern or resident physician or even better, residency in Chicago, you will find some eerie similarities to your own experience. His experience actually led to some important health policy changes in America where patient dumping in emergency rooms has been banned. His 17 years of frontline work in Chicago's public hospital also saw the transition from the old hospital to a new hospital. More importantly, he illustrates from a physician/patient perspective how our current health care financing system has failed us and why we need a single payer, national health insurance plan for this country. For those interested in health policy, but from a personal real life perspective, this is the book for you.

Excellent book well written and factual. Any one from Chicago and the medical field will really enjoy this book.

Excellent account of daily life at Cook County Hospital and the efforts by house staff to improve medical care for its patients. This account documents the period of time after my time there 1963-64 when house staff simply tried to endure the daily grind of taking care of an unending stream of patients. My hat is off to those who also found time to successfully advocate for their patients.

Loved this book...could not put it down.... especially since I worked there in the mid 1960's..RN in Women and Men's admitting.

David Ansell tells his experiences of working as an intern and physician with Cook County Medical Center. Told with candor and an activist's zeal, Ansell's story gives an enlightening look into the challenges of offering quality medical care in the final quarter of the 20th century at Cook County. Working in what is comparable to third world conditions, Ansell tells of the challenge he faced as a young doctor trying to make a difference in the life and health of his patients at County. Though this book reads like a memoir, it also contains a history of the medical and political developments that occurred in the latter 20th century and their impact on lives of the poor in Chicago and Cook County. While a bit uneven in quality of writing, Ansell's story is engaging and challenging to anyone concerned about health and well being of the poor.

Currently entering my third year of medical School. Dr. Ansell's book is a shining example of a life of boots on the ground medicine and activism.I highly recommend this book to any medical student especially people in Chicago. There is a lot of history in here about the County Hospital.
