The book has 297 pages of which the first 80 pages are a general intro inc. electric vehicle history, 81 to 259 is an overview of the technical aspects in general that you will need to understand. Page 260, chapter 11 is entitled 'Electric vehicle conversion' ... Personally I would have put this first because this is an overview/introduction of what we really want to know and after reading this I understand the value of pages 81 to 259.I don't think you will be able to carry out a conversion after reading this book ... but it can get you started. The book was published first in 1994 so when it states "TODAY'S BEST CONTROLLER SOLUTION" ... well ..... things have moved on.And although it is not yet plug and play to convert to EV you actually won't need the all the mathematics and physics of this book.Cost me $2 used and in good condition ... worth buying it? YES.

The first edition has saved me much heartache in my building a converted vehicle. I used the basic schematic for laying out the system (with slight modification, being I don't use a DC/DC charger for my 12VDC low volt system). As for the technical aspects, we as a 'modern tech society' I think too often that we must 'have it all handed to us' and sometimes an author realizes that people working with such tech, will have to research other sources for more in depth study. I would hope ANYONE going into even thinking of converting an ICE to an EV, would plan on learning a lot of math, formulae, some battery chemistry, have a basic understanding of physical principles and be ready to study a whole lotta 'lectronics! But the end result is in my mind that you continue to learn and study... We are at a critical juncture in society, the world condition and this field of EV conversion/building technology. Thomas Freidman made the comment recently,"We need all kinds of people in their garages working on this (EV, green-hybrid) technology!" (my paraphrase). And Bob Brandt's book, is the book that set me forward. There are many other books appearing and that are selling for a couple hundred dollars! And that want you to buy this or that or subscribe to this ideology or 'set of facts'... THIS BOOK, is 'well this is what ya do here...', plain and simple it lays out an outline of what you need to do and consider. Buy THIS BOOK! And you won't be sorry, of course it will be the first of many....

This book is pretty good. It covers the basics of EV building. My main issue with it is that it has become woefully out of date. In the years since it was published, controllers, batteries and motors have all changed for the better. The EVs you could build with this book are too old-school.I am all for the home builder doing their thing, its just that this book needs some updates and links to where you can find the best new controllers, motors, batteries out on the web. If you were wondering what it would take to convert that old 4 banger car into an EV vehicle this book will get you started in the right direction basically.From there you can probably find what you are looking for out on the web. So its a decent source, just realize its a bit dated.Thanks for reading my review.

I picked up this book because I was curious. I am a car guy who loves working on his cars, and loves motor sports, especially dirt track racing. I am probably not the target audience for this book.Still, my thinking on ecology has been seriously challenged by my Church (I am Catholic, and Vatican City State is the world's first carbon neutral country, and the Pope has been adamant about our duty to be good stewards of the planet). This has challenged my thinking. Also, the national security implications of our addiction to foreign oil has also challenged my thinking. I have decided it is time to begin the process of weaning myself and my family off of fossil fuels. After composting and planting a garden, making the house more energy efficient, and adopting a generally more green lifestyle, this is the next step.I dug into this book, and loved much of it. However, it is in desperate need of a competent editor, and may be a little difficult to wade through as a result, but the content is excellent and is there for you if you are willing to dig a bit.Let me address the strengths of this excellent book first:1) The section on the history of the electric car, its technology, and its strengths and weaknesses is comprehensive and very convincing. I was somewhat skeptical at first but after reading this book I am convinced that a) electric cars are the wave of the future, b) my concerns about them were largely misplaced, c) it is probably my patriotic duty to drive one, both because I love the US and support Israel, and d) the environment, and our pocketbooks, NEED us to move away from the internal combustion engine.2) The mathematical sections, while difficult to wade through and in desperate need of a good educator/editor to make the material more understandable, are actually quite strong if you really stick to them. However, there is so much help out there on line now that you really don't need to do any of these mathematical formulations. Kits for conversion are now commercially available and there are experts out there willing to answer questions for free. This book needed an editor to keep reminding the authors to "keep it simple, stupid."3) This topic is just fascinating, and it would be difficult for any remotely competent author to mess it up.4) Despite what you may think about complexity, EV's are actually REALLY simple and elegant, and you are not being made obsolete and you are NOT being forced to hang up your ratchets. This is a big deal for some guys. After all, as is so eloquently pointed out in Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work car manufacturers and others are busy designing products that "hide the works" in an almost blatant attempt to keep people ignorant and divorced from their machines. This is as unnecessary as it is stupid. The electric car predates the internal combustion car, and is what Mrs. Henry Ford drove (I am not kidding). You can relatively easily build one yourself on a used chassis (any used car... preferably light). You can do this with little or no mechanical experience. When you see how easy it is by going on line and looking at the work others have done, and start experimenting yourself, you will get VERY angry at car companies for not getting this right sooner. It really is impossible to understand how it has taken so long for car companies to wake up to the fact that we NEED EVs.Weaknesses:1) The future of the EV, as other reviewers have pointed out, is NOT likely to be DC (unless perhaps one is drag racing). If you want mileage, and the ability to get up hills well, I think AC motors are superior (and yes... more expensive). The data are clear however, and GM has put its (umm... our?) money in the AC camp with the new Volt, and there is a reason for that. There is not enough information here on AC.2) Really... how expensive is it to hire an editor? I mean, mistaking "then" with "than" over and over again in the mathematics section made me distrust the fact that these guys had their math right. Learn to use the English language correctly, and if you are not strong in this area, HIRE AN EDITOR. This isn't some self produced book either. Its McGraw Hill! Exactly who was responsible to sit these boys down and say: "this section is entirely unnecessary... these words and misspelled.... this book would be more user friendly if..." The editing is abominable, and is a real drawback. The standards of editing are similar with what you see on online reviews like this one. This is not a good thing. Someone who edited for the "For Dummies" series could have turned this into a world class book. Instead, it is a 3 star book. That is a shame.3) The strength of the EV is that it is simple, has fewer moving parts, is therefore very reliable, and is very good for the planet. I enjoy turning the ratchets... I do not enjoy doing oil changes. I won't miss them when they are gone. The strength of the EV is it is easy to understand, and that you can work on it yourself very easily, even build one from scratch with little mechanical experience. Simplicity is a strength. The book is too complex, introduces unnecessary concepts (like mathematical formulas.. which while fun will slow you down), and is therefore unlikely to appeal to guys who can do this conversion with their eyes closed. I am referring here to the countless shade tree/home garage techs who do their own brakes, do their own oil, watch NASCAR, love cars because they are CARS, and enjoy turning ratchets. This is who I am, but I needed the college degree I sometimes think I wasted my money on to get through some of this book. There was no reason for that.Still, I strongly recommend this book. It educated me on how EVs work, and I am planning my own conversion. After reading this book, and doing some additional research, I understand how the new hybrids work, how the new VOLT will work, and I understand that I can still work on my cars and enjoy them even if they are electric. This is VERY important, and something I hope the car companies get right. It would be very easy for them to get this wrong... introduce a "solid state" car or something ludicrous. I hope to heck they don't do this. If they do, I will be only driving my own aftermarket conversions from now on.

Should philosophy lead us to consolation or away from it? I think in some ways we find that the best consolation is that one does not need, and need not look for, consolations. That is, if we actually look upon our sorrows and failings, we find that they are only subjective and transitory. Thus, there is nothing in life that one should be sorry for having lost or never having gained. The process by which these things occur, or do not occur, is ephemeral and unreal as it is only perceived by us as real through time. This realization is the consolation that frees us from the need for consolations. We cannot find in philosophy the consolation offered by religion. Philosophy cannot be pursued in order to find support for comfortable doctrines. However, for purposes of this review, let’s assume that philosophy can lead us to consolation and see what we can find. What follows is a summary of the philosophers, the problems and the consolations offered.These are not the easy consolations of religion or psychology, telling us that everything will work out in the end or that we can be cured of our anxieties, these are the consolations of philosophy. Easy consolations are cruel lies as Nietzsche tells us. Philosophy as consolation certainly has a much more inclusive and embracing sense in that it suggests reflecting about one’s experience of existence as opposed to the more technical narrow meaning that philosophy has acquired over the recent century. This I think is unfortunate. For to reflect is to think and in this thinking we encounter a broader understanding of our experience of existence. Philosophy, at its best, provides resources for thinking about living.What I present here is a quick summary of the consolations offered. I cannot do the chapters written by Alain de Botton justice with these short summaries, please read the book. The book itself cannot do justice to the philosophers selected, please read the philosophers. Each has much more to offer, far beyond the simple consolations outlined in this book, but this book is a readable and easily accessible introduction.The subject matter of philosophy is drawn from the real life problems faced by real people confronted by reality. As such, Alain de Button follows the example of Socrates in trying to make philosophy accessible to anyone with a taste for it and Boethius in showing us that philosophy can bring us to a higher understating of existence by providing us with the mental equipment needed for a more rigorous contemplation of the our experience of existence. It is my modest hope that this abbreviated summary will help increase the appetite for philosophy.Unpopularity – Look to Socrates and understand that your unpopularity is simply a majority or plurality opinion and that very often majority opinions are irrational. Most popular opinions about life and reality are based upon misunderstandings, ignorance and mistakes anyway. Take comfort and treat such easy popular opinions and conventional wisdom with the skepticism that they deserve. Popular opinion is often as mistaken as it is held to be certain and common sense is too common to be of any value. We have the right, and the duty, to question all popular opinions, especially opinions about our worth. Living without thinking is popular, but you think, therefor you are unpopular- take consolation.Not Having Enough Money – Look to Epicurus and understand that wealth cannot buy happiness. Pursuit of wealth, power and fame is a fool’s errand. The fool mistakes the acquisition of wealth for the things in this very short life that do have value such as friendship, thoughtfulness and freedom from exaggerated desire. You do not have enough money? How much money is enough? There is a diminishing marginal utility to wealth not found in friendship and thoughtfulness. The exterior trapping of great personal wealth are the things that impress only the mot common of people. Take consolation, you have not contracted the plague of endless desire, not everything desired is desirable anyway. You are not owned by material things, rejoice, you are the healthy one! Or, from the original author of ‘The Consolation of Philosophy’, Boethius himself: Wealth cannot alleviate desire, quite the contrary, it only creates new desires so why should we chase after it in the hopes that it will provide satisfaction to our desires?Frustration – Look to Seneca and understand that frustration is the product of your unrealistic and overly optimistic expectations. Temper your expectations and you will reduce your frustration level. We take great comfort in anticipation only to find that anticipation lies. A belief that everything will go well or as planned is the surest road to frustration. The cruel evil empress of the world herself, Fortune, intervenes in our lives too often. We should meditate on death and disaster daily to temper unrealistic hopes, anticipations and expectations and thus avoid metaphysical shocks. Always anticipate the worst and you find consolation in that things are not that bad after all.Inadequacy – Look to Montaigne and understand that those who find you to be inadequate or weird cannot see beyond their own limited experience of existence. What is accepted as ‘normal’ leaves out more of the human experience than it includes. The world is more peculiar than the ‘adequate’ and ‘normal’ people can see. The dichotomy between normal and abnormal, adequate and inadequate is a false one. I will quote from the Roman playwright Terence who once said: “I am human, nothing of that which is human is alien to me.” So the next time you meet or hear about a trans-gendered person, cut them a break, their experience of life is just a human as yours. Take consolation, error stalks all narrowly conceived human judgments, there is more to you than the judgment of another person can do justice. Be glad that your misjudgment was terminated, thank the one who rejected you and be wiser in the next encounter if this is possible.Difficulties – Look to Nietzsche and find that difficulty, mastering difficulty, is the source of fulfillment. Difficulties are thus a source of joy. Our greatest pain is thus juxtaposed with our greatest joy. Rejoice in your difficulties, your growth is impossible without them. We all know the Neitzschean aphorism, “…what does not kill me makes me stronger”. Without pain to move us, we will languish in mediocrity. We will suffer in the course of overcoming difficulty and this is necessary as well as unavoidable and even desirable. Find in your difficulties great consolation, the mistake is to believe that success is possible without difficulty. Every adversity is thus an opportunity for growth if we do not waste it. Difficulty is the path to acquiring greatness. In Nietzschean terms, adversity is the necessary root for the flower of triumph. The consolation is that often a desirable result must start with an undesirable beginning. The road to fulfillment is not an easy one. The desire to abolish difficulty is as stupid as the desire to abolish bad weather.In these consolations, we are called to think very carefully about what matters and how to act into the world of our experience and avoid imprisoning ourselves in false ideas, six of which are listed here. Consolation thus brings liberation when we gain the ability to see things as they are without false valuations.

I first learned of this book while watching the PBS series in December 2011, that was based on this work, featuring the author Alain de Botton as host (this was a great program to stumble upon during the miasma of the holiday season!). That series, similarly to the book, was comprised of one episode dedicated to each of the 6 philosophers in question (Socrates, Epicurus, Seneca, Montaigne, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche). I found this work to be a fast, enjoyable and accessible read. It was absorbing enough that I was able to read it in public amid noise and distractions. "Consolations of Philosophy" was not something that I had to labour over; the focus and intention of this books' main themes and subsequent discussions were clear. De Botton deconstructed the principal concepts of these philosophers down to their essence. And as several other Amazon reviewers have mentioned, this work functions as both an introduction to philosophy -- As well as a self-help book. For anyone going through hard times in his / her life -- Emotionally, socially, fiscally -- This book will indeed be a great "consolation".The only philosopher whose works I had read previous to reading "Consolations of Philosophy" was Nietzsche, a writer whose books ("Birth of Tragedy", "The Case of Wagner", "Twilight of the Idols" and "Also Sprach Zarathustra"; the latter being the most memorable) I've found to be simultaneously inspiring, mystifying, and incomprehensible. I attempted to read Schopenhauer a few years ago but it didn't hold my interest. Since completing this work by de Botton, I also tried to read "Selected Essays" by Michel de Montaigne (Dover Thrift Editions, 2011). But I had trouble connecting with Montaigne as well.What I ultimately found to be one of the most important and moving aspects of "Consolations of Philosophy" was the fact that Nietzsche, in spite of his hardships and loneliness -- Did not allow his vision to be influenced by pessimism (this notion being stressed by de Botton in this book). Although the life of Nietzsche seems to have been cursed; to have been deprived of happiness -- Deep down he must have known that he alone was responsible for his state of being (as conversely, he advised men "to live dangerously").Stephen C. A necessary read for people who love philosophy and don't know where to begin... great info on a few important philosophers, how they lived, how they thought, and how they changed the world's vision.

I always gain some wisdom when I read De Botton. And they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Some easily interpreted philosophy, in case you are put off by the real stuff. It also has pictures. Very casual but takes up meaningful topics. I give it 4 stars, as it isn't really penetrating and original philosophy. But why read the original when you can learn nearly as much here.

The book is well written, fun, and very informative.I have the impression that a change of paradigm is happening in marketing. And, as it is already possible to see, sensory marketing will play a huge role in the future. This book represents the best reference I have found. Yes, I have read many other books on the topic. Most of them, though, are written by practitioners or writers without much understanding of what is "science" and what is "tale." Krishna, working in academia, based her book on solid scientific roots, being able, however, to present her argumentations in a very easy and clear way.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in sensory marketing. The book is written in a very intelligent, witty, and easy-to-follow style. Given the rising importance of sensory aspects of marketing, this is a must-read book for anyone interested in marketing management in general. This book provides a very good overview of how our senses (related to vision, audition, smell, taste, and touch) influence our behavior. I also found the illustrative examples very helpful. Overall, a very interesting book, written by a high-profile Marketing scholar.

In the experience economy of today, it is imperative for both academics and managers to understand how we experience through our five senses. This is the understanding the book provides. I read the entire book on a plane ride -- easy to follow and a delight to read.
