Eli meets Peter Ash (the main character and hero of the story) and Peter sees something special in Eli. With sorrow and fear taking over his heart, Eli sees only a “saltine” in Peter.Peter is in Memphis to help a friend of June’s, Wanda Wyatt, an emotionally wounded photojournalist. Wanda is another amazing character brought to life by the author. Yes, there is the usual action and violence that seems to follow Peter wherever he goes. But, we see the devastation of drug gangs, white supremacists, and massive evil. This is a powerful story with tension and suspense, but also love and hope. Hard to put down and may even be okay to read by itself. This series, though, is definitely more enjoyable and understandable if read in order. This is a tantalizingly good read, and I’m hoping for a long series!

I've been to Memphis, Tennessee many times. So when Peter Ash made his way there, I knew the story would be good. Memphis is a place with a long history, much of it tragic. The description of white suburbs and black poverty, framed by music and old grandeur is exactly what I saw.The story pits Peter, and of course Lewis, against the cruelty that comes of both poverty and racism. It's powerful, exciting, and tragic. I raced through the book, anxious to see what came next.The book is satisfying. Good does come out ahead. I don't know about other people, but I need stories like this. I need heroes like Peter and Lewis to keep me fighting the good fight. Our world is full of ugly. To read about good men winning against the ugly helps me mentally.I can't be them, and frankly wouldn't want to be. But I can fight the ugly in my own way, feeling like Peter and Lewis have my back. At least inside my head.

I liked the story about the boys who robbed the jewelry store. I could sympathize with then. Plus they did not kill anyone. I understood Peter's actions with the drug dealers. The way they dealt with the villains, however, was where they lost me. Participating in a car chase that left 9 dead and others injured when they could have just waited for the brothers at the barn made them as guilty of the crimes as the brothers. The fact that Peter realized what was happening and did not disengage was out of character with the person he had been in previous books,

I'm a big fan of the Peter Ash character, and I loved the first three books in this series so much that I pre-ordered "Tear It Down" and started reading it as soon as it arrived.The first half of the book is classic Nick Petrie, with refined characters and a carefully constructed plot. Then things started falling apart, and the author deviated completely from all that has made his previous novels so wonderful. As things devolved to overkill (literally) and impossible situations, I honestly couldn't wait to get the book over with. What a disappointment!If you haven't read Nick Petrie, buy one of his other books, not this one. If you're Nick Petrie, go back to being yourself! You don't need to write this way to sell books!

Tear It Down was a thrilling and action-packed read with a plot that took a few unexpected turns along the way.Peter Ash is getting reckless after months of downtime recovering from a leg injury, so June Cassidy sends him to help out her friend Wanda who has received a few threats recently. But when Peter arrives in Memphis, it’s clear the situation has escalated after he finds that someone drove a dump truck into the front of Wanda’s house. Unable to figure out the reasoning behind the threats, Peter sets out to fix Wanda’s house only to have his truck stolen while he’s getting gas. When Peter finds out the kid is in more trouble than he realizes, Peter aims to help him which puts Peter on the wrong side of some local gangsters. With problems piling up left and right, Peter knows he needs to get to the bottom of things before someone ends up dead.The plot following who was threatening Wanda was intriguing because as far as Wanda was concerned, she didn’t have any enemies. I was surprised when we finally found out the reason for the threats as it definitely wasn’t what I was expecting. Eli’s plot was much more interesting to me and I was eager to learn more about the boy and how he ended up where he did. Of the two plots I enjoyed Eli’s plotline more than Wanda’s although they were both interesting. One thing that surprised me was the two plots never intertwined which is unusual when there are two central storylines in a book. I did like how both of them turned out though and I think the author wrapped everything up pretty well. I found there were more surprises in Eli’s plot which is why I ultimately enjoyed it a bit more than Wanda’s.Peter’s restlessness was not surprising to me having read the first three books in this series. He’s definitely a man who’s gotten used to being on the move, but the life he has (and the life he wants) with June means he can’t wander about anymore. I was happy to learn that Peter was still in therapy making progress on dealing with his claustrophobia and the “white static” that accompanies it. It’s a condition he knows will never fully go away, but I liked that he wanted to work on it so he could have a life with June.As to the side characters, I was very happy to see the return of my favorite character in the series, Lewis. I love Lewis and Peter’s friendship and how much they’ve come to trust one another since their first meeting. Much of Lewis’ past is still a mystery although we do get a bit of background on him in this book. June continues to be a fantastic lady and I really enjoy her and Peter’s relationship. The two complement each other very well and I like how much they understand each other.Overall Tear It Down and the rest of the Peter Ash series are fantastic reads that are perfect for when you’re looking for action heavy thrillers. I definitely recommend this series if you’re a fan of characters similar to Jack Reacher.

Unbelievable book and hard to put down. Sure hope this series continues. Peter Ash is one of the best characters in this genre. The storyline in this book was very realistic. Fast paced and action packed. Lewis returns again to help his friend. New characters in this one to both cheer for and hate.

WAAAAAAAAAYYY too longwinded. Gives you a history on every single person Bob Marley ever walked past on the street and then say "Bob toured Europe for 2 years", What??? How about a little more on that instead of the constant name-dropping? This is also the expanded version with more content, which is just worse in every way (I have read both versions). I suppose if you are a historian and not a music-lover you'll appreciate this more than I.

In the 1960's at the confluence of the streams of Jamaican independence and the messianic Rastafarian religion, there came a once in a lifetime musical genius who was born, if not in a stable, then in similarly unpromising surroundingss in the mountains of the Jamaican hinterland.This is a very detailed book that explains a great deal about Bob Marley's background and career. Now I can tell you what a "goverment yard in Trenchtown" (from the lyrics of No Woman, No Cry) means and I know what Duppy Conqueror means. I did not know these things before.This is certainly not a fan biography, or even a hagiography. In fact Marley does not even come across as a particularly likeable or admirable person. Perhaps there is a reason for this. I have a couple of CDs that have interviews with Bob Marley. It seems to me that Marley was not particularly articulate in person, and that what he had to say was all said in his songs. The author had many interviews with Marley in his lifetime, but none of them seem to have been very profound.There is something about the style of the author that I don't particularly like, a certain like of directness or reference points, if you like. In a way he admits this in appendixes in which he says that he really has no way of telling what parts of much of the material he was told in interviews is true--so he just quotes it all, and lets you decide for yourself.In the end it seems to me that White piles up lots and lots of data, but we don't learn much about Bob Marley the man. Maybe in the end the Natural Mystic eludes all attemps to pin him down. But the book does give tons of background information that helps to understand his music, and even the particular events in Marley's life that inspired the lyrics of certain songs.The book is definitely worth having, but the true essence of Bob Marley lies in his music, which, fortunately we can all still enjoy today.

as a fan of Bob Marley's I was interested in learning about his life and relationships; what inspired him to write certain songs, etc. Instead, I got a well documented look at the legal wrangling, the murders and exhaustive commentary on Jamaica's socio-economic standing. After I read it I didn't feel as though I knew the real Bob Marley -- but I got a hell of a history lesson!

I was so looking forward to reading Catch a Fire, the Life of Bob Marley by Timothy White, but truthfully it turned out to be a constant struggle. Timothy White is a font of information, rather than a good story-teller and that is a real shame.The beginning of the book we are given lengthy lessons in the origins of the Rastafari religion, historic background on the island of Jamaica, an explanation about reggae music and how it developed and a detailed account of how Haile Selassie came into power in Ethiopia which explained his relationship to King Solomon of Biblical fame. And then on page 60, we began to learn about Robert Nestor Marley's parentage and early life.Throughout the book there were many interesting stories and tidbits of Marley's life including some quite fantastical supernatural stories. We learn that Marley's white father took him and placed him with a stranger for a year in his early life and his mother couldn't find him. We learn about his maternal grandfather, Omeriah who was a leader in his rural community who was an herbalist and able to communicate with spirits as a"Myalman -a person who possessed the knowledge and the power to deflect the machination of 0beah and to heal with folk medicine."But throughout the book, the stories is interrupted with so much background information that the story of Marley's life fails to flow and unfurl in a fluent way and the facts themselves become irrelevant and confused in the readers mind.To make matters worse the end isn't the end, but another 100 pages have been added since the books publication in 1983. These pages in the rambling and random manner of the previous 300 detail the lives of Bob's loved ones and family after his death and the legal battles which have been fought over publishing and recording rights.I truthfully would have loved to read a concise and flowing account of Bob Marley's life, but this book did not provide that.

An incomparable biography of an absolute legend. Once you begin reading, you won’t be able to put it down. No literary source has ever provided a more informed and detailed insight of a man whose legacy and music will certainly withstand the test of time.

This book is more than just a biography of the late Bob Marley. It has a lot to offer the reader.Jamaican history and the history of the Rastafarian religion are covered in detail. It's also a ghost story, where as the author tells us how the believe in the supernatural, influences everyday Jamaican life.Marley, of course is the central character in the narrative. The other characters are highly interesting also. Bob's mother and father (the word father is used loosely) are central characters of the story, as are the member of the Wailers and his faithful wife, RitaI highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Marley, the Caribbean or Reggae music.RIP Bob

Delivery was very fast. It seemed as if I had just ordered it and bang, there it was! The book is great! It tells of the human touch behind that great music. I also had no clue as to the origins of Rastafarianism until I read the book. All in all, a well worth it purchase. Extremely interesting and enlightening!

Laila Lalami is the author of the short story collection Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits, which was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award, and the novel Secret Son, which was on the Orange Prize long list. Her essays and opinion pieces have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Nation, The Guardian, and The New York Times, and in many anthologies. She is the recipient of a British Council Fellowship, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a Lannan Residency Fellowship and is an associate professor of creative writing at the University of California at Riverside. The imagined memoir Mustafa ibn Muhammad, Laila Lalami’s Moor’s Account gives voice to Mustafa, the first slave in the New World and the fourth survivor of the Navárez expedition. Telling the tale of his life in the New World, Mustafa carefully traces and details extreme travail the four of them faced in the New World. Parallel to his account of hardship in the New World are stories of his childhood in Azemmur, his fall from grace as a merchant who sells slaves, and his selling himself into slavery to provide for his family. It is the nature of histories that they are usually told by those in power, the privileged and the prized, those with authority, a ready audience, and a voice. It does not make it less true, but certainly less complete. If the underdogs are given a chance to recount their own version of events, what would they say?Estebanico, or Mustafa Ibn Muhammad Ibn Abdussalam al-Zamori, whose self-inflicted slavery, sends him to the new world as part of a Narvaez expedition to conquer, Christianise and do commerce with the Native Americans. Widely considered to be the first black explorer in America, little is really known about him. Laila Lalami writes with a facility that slowly and surely pulls you in, till you are ensconced in the swell of the story. As Estebanico tells his story, we are made aware of the penury and hardship that informs his decision to sell himself into slavery. He goes from one master to another, partakes, inadvertently, in wars and skirmishes that lead to the decimation of local tribes and confiscation of their lands and goods; he witnesses the killing of companions by the native Americans, marries a local girl, and somehow assumes the role of shaman and healer, inevitably becoming a more trusted ally of the very people the conquistadors set out to overcome.All through the novel, we are made acutely aware of how histories are fashioned, and truths distorted; how the Spaniards’ account of their dealings with the locals, their high disregard for traditions and customs, their condescension and pride are slowly challenged by human and natural forces; sickness, hunger and loss of companions in storms and river rapids, conspire to turn the hunter into the hunted. At the end of it all, only Estebanico and three others are left as part of the original expedition. We also see the contrast between the bellicosity of the conquerors and the benignity, most times, of the original habitants. The Indians can be trusted to keep their word, but not the Spaniards. In this respect, who then is more honourable? Who more trustworthy? Who is the savage and who the saviour?Lalami gives voice to the voiceless, those not seen and never heard; whose eyes have beheld such truths that they swell with an untold grief. We only know what we know because someone else has said so. History is replete with stories like these.There is a sense great sense of longing on Estebanico’s part, being far removed from family and loved ones, he must survive, seek out new friendships and alliances, and keep alive the hope of his return to Azzemuth, his place of birth. He never makes it back though, but does return to his wife’s homeland. There he will spend the rest of his days conjuring up images of a different life, in a land he never forget but can never re-trace his steps back to.There is little to criticise in this work by a writer I discovered only by chance. Given my usual jaunts between English and South American fiction, reading something from North Africa felt like a breath of fresh air. There are more stories in that part of the world than one can imagine. One only need be open to those possibilities.

I have read a lot of books in search of guidance on successful cider making. And I have made a few batches of passable cider, always felt they could be better, but didn't know how to improve my crafting. There are a lot of books out there worth reading, but none have put all the pieces together, until now. Jolicoeur's book is the one I have searched for all these years!The author thoroughly details the steps to making great cider--everything from selecting the right apples, handling the apples properly, to the qualities to look for in a grinder and press. There is a wealth of information here--far more than you'll need for your first batch, but plenty to reward you for re-reading, and for improving each batch of cider you make. The author's research has clearly been exhaustive and there is a lot of personal experience underpinning the advice. There is also a lot of technical information in this book, mostly in the form of fermentation chemistry, but the book is organized in such a fashion that it is easy to breeze through the chemistry and focus on the practicalities of making cider (that said, the chemistry is important and something every eager maker should work through at least once).The author's writing style is quite approachable and conversational in tone.I am really grateful for this book! It arrived as I began gathering apples for this year's pressing. On my first glance through the book the author saved me from making three mistakes that would have compromised the quality of my cider. This encouraged me to slow down and get through the book before committing any more mistakes, and now I'm confident that this year's cider will be my best ever.One final note. The author developed a series of spreadsheets for managing cider production--from calibrating your hydrometer to calculating blends and tracking fermentation progress. These sheets and their use are discussed in the book, and available for download from the publisher. The spreadsheets alone are worth the price of the book!

Certainly comprehensive -- need to know what varieties of apples to grow in your orchard to make a perfect juice for cider? Here you go! But if you're just looking for an introductory-level guide to making homemade cider, this isn't a great start. Maybe I'll be ready for this in a few years...for now, the internet gives me better / faster advice regarding simple protocols for making cider.

Beautifully laid out and photographed, this book had everything I was looking for. The main thing I wanted was an informed discussion of the pros and cons of using sulfites in cider production. This book has the most technical and thorough discussion I've seen, even though the author himself admits to only using sulfites on a small proportion of the cider he produces...Most non-UK cider discussions I've seen all take it as a given that you will put sulfites or similar chemicals in the must in order to control fermentation...This book discusses the pros and cons in a non-divisive way, and explains (the basics) of the chemistry behind the practice.If you want to build a press there is a huge section with drawings and photos. And, there is a gorgeous section on varieties of apples, again including gorgeous photos of each type covered.Lastly, the book starts with the basics of making cider, end-to-end, but the remainder of the book then goes step-by-step through all aspects of the process. Great and gorgeous book.

I was well aware of Mssr. Jolicoeur's website before he delved into writing this most excellent volume. In an area of study where most of the scientific material is difficult to access, or long out-of-print, this hefty volume brings a rare fusion of science and common sense to the Cider afficionado. For someone who merely wants to dabble in converting their local farmer's market sweet cider into something more potent, this textbook-like tome may be intimidating. That said, it neither reads like a textbook, nor does it present a difficult scientific explanation for the aspects of the cider craft. Mssr. Jolicoeur is, if anything, a very down-to-earth cider maker and cider apple orchardist. His fluid and engaging style reflects that, while his suggestions for growing, equipment and production all reflect a "best practices, without excess" approach. However the book also contains a wealth of information on specific areas that have been a deep personal interest to Mssr. Jolicoeur. To wit, there is an extensive section on making your own grinding and pressing equipment that is unsurpassed by anything online or in print - anywhere. Overall this is the best guide out there for the dedicated hobbyist and small producer.The only proviso I would attach to my otherwise complete enthusiasm for this publication is that it has a certain regional focus. As an example, for those who might be looking for advice on what apple varieties to grow in the deep south there is little contained here. Mssr. Jolicoeur is clearly an expert in his climate area, a part of Quebec that corresponds to USDA (climate/growing region) Zone 4. He has also incorporated cultural information from colleagues in the Northeastern U.S., but none any further south than USDA zone 6. So the information on apple varieties, diseases and yields observed may be of little use to growers below the northern tier (such as myself in USDA Zone 8). Regardless, this information comprises a minority of the text and most of the well presented material is useful to everyone. With Claude Jolicoeur's book.....vous avez de la chance !
