The physical book is marvelous, but this new Kindle version is much more convenient; you'll want to have IMDB and Google standing by as you read!Silverman's writing is fluid and engaging, and his intense devotion to, and research of, the subject is evident on every page. It's clear that he had unprecedented access to Mr. Lean, as well other key figures in his movies like Katharine Hepburn, Omar Sharif, Alec Guinness, and many more. Note that the Kindle version does not include illustrations or photos, but you'll probably want both print and Kindle anyway.

Stephen M. Silverman, an experienced movie reporter, had remarkable access to David Lean in preparing this exhaustive tour through the great director's legacy. a good read

I'm wondering where the reviews are. Why aren't people reading this and other books in an excellent series? I ran across the publisher by accident and have devoured dozens of the books. This book is a very good volume in the series "Earth." It is not a book on geology, nor an introduction to seismology, although it covers aspects of both. The word "culture" in the title really is the main aspect--the impact of earthquakes on societies, how earthquakes are interpreted in literature and the arts. Consider for example the impact of the famous Lisbon quake, devastating for Portugal, but reverberating in European culture for decades after.This book has less coverage of film and literature than other books in this series. It has a more eclectic approach. It has a chapter on the devastating 1923 Tokyo quake, one considering prediction and warning, among the other chapters. The focus is largely on Europe, with a fair amount on Japan. (Note: tsunamis of course relate to earthquakes, but that's literally another book in the series).I found most interesting the possibility that human use of water can lubricate faults and cause tremors, in the form of injection of water waste into geologic strata, and also how the buildup of reservoirs may be related (China, are you listening?). One wonders about fracking, not covered in the book.This is a well written book, full of information. Such science as is covered does not require previous knowledge.
