Really enjoyed this book. Excellent comprehensive information on values, color mixing, brush exercises to loosen up, and so much more! Some of the information was a little repetitive, if you've read the author's other books, but it was still good information, especially if this is the only book you read. I really like that the focus is on acrylic paint. So many books on this painting style are focused on oil. It's great to see that this loose, bold, painterly style is also achievable in acrylic. I'm really inspired to challenge myself with some of the projects and exercises in this book. Thanks!!
This is a really good technique book. You can be taught step-by-step how to do a painting, but without the 'why's', you'll really only ever to be able to paint 'that' painting. Patti writes about the why's and how's of her process, giving tools that can help you become a better artist. In addition to so many practical tips for painting, she talks about artistic license which I think is something a lot of painters, especially those new to painting, don't let themselves use enough when painting. I know it's something I still find challenging.To put it simply, ff you read this book and pay attention to what the author says, your painting will improve. I've painted and taught intro painting classes for years, and very early on in the book, I learned tips about value and color that will change the way I paint from here on out.
I have tons of art books and this one so far is my favorite! Why? It's VERY easy to read, well laid out, lessons are easily understood. I know it's title is "learn to paint fast and Loose", but this book is WAY more than that. It is the very FOUNDATION of painting easily explained. She puts great emphasis on creating value drawings first, before you ever think about lifting up a brush and then she explains the importance of color as it relates to value. I am a completely self taught artist, have read tons of books and watched Ytube video's to find my way. I havet always felt very frustrated with my work, couldn't put my finger on why it didn't "read" properly and I just couldn't "nail it" or get that "awe" out of my painting. What she teaches in this book is the "why" it's not working. Like me I'm sure you've looked at tons of visual art in your life, some of them pop out at you and others are mediocre at best. These lessons are what will separate you from the novice painter. Once you get what's she's trying to tell you, it's a true "ah ha" moment! I'm now off to spend as much time as I possibly can just drawing value sketches until I can do it without thinking. Buy this book, it's so much more than it's title, believe me!
I have taken a workshop with the author, so I am familiar with her ideas. This book is very complete...everything I learned in the workshop is in this book. The colors are rich, pages are glossy, writing is clear. It is a book to turn to when you are stuck as an artist. Gives you a new idea or approach. Very down to earth too.
Bought this book and couldn't wait to get started! Patti Mollica ia a thoughful and bold painter. This well written book is filled with excellent insights, examples and exercises for both new and experienced painters! My flower image took 25 brush strokes. SO MUCH FUN!
I like this book a lot; it covers a lot of what I’ve forgotten since high school. She covers value, value sketching, value pitfalls, composition and design, color scheme, chroma, color harmony, glazing, blending, and more. Additionally she has exercises for learning to use more paint, and to increase your speed. I like her art for the most part. I would have liked there to have been a photo with every painting she includes in the book so I could see how she transformed the actual photo into the art piece. Honestly, without that, you can’t validate her interpretations so you can confirm your application of her instructions. I’m probably overthinking this. I don’t care for her cityscape pieces because they’re too undefined but that is entirely my opinion and for those pieces in particular a photo of the scene should have definitely been included. But I really like the book and I’m buying her other book about color theory as well.
After purchasing Patti's first three booklets, I had to know more, so I took her three day class, and I was not disappointed.Primarily a watercolorist, I found the genesis of good art --again! I had been noodling around with acrylic but learned that "acrylic' is a capture term for enormous product lines which can be very transparent or as heavy as impasto. I can now experiment without reservation. This new book, lays it all out in perfect order. Her sculptural style takes us back to first principles which is the bedrock of all good art.
I just started reading this book and I’ve already learned several things that are going to help my paintings immeasurably. Easy to read, great illustrations/paintings and very informative.
