Frances K. Pohl is the Dr. Mary Ann Vanderzyl Reynolds Professor of Humanities and Professor of Art History at Pomona College in Claremont, California. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. Since moving to Pomona in 1985, she has taught a wide variety of courses in nineteenth- and twentieth-century North American art. Her work has focused on the art of the United States, in particular the work of Ben Shahn, about whom she has written two books, and the relationship between the visual arts and working-class culture. Professor Pohl has taught in the United States for many years, but her Canadian origins give her a unique continental perspective on American art.

I teach an Art in the Americas course that ranges from the time of Western contact (Cortez's invasion of Mexico) through the end of the 20th century. This is the course text I use. The book closely connects art of all kinds (paintings, sculpture, architecture, other created items that are lumped under the term "material culture") with social and cultural history of the Americas. The focus is broader in the earlier chapters but narrows to the U.S. in the later chapters.The illustrations are large, pretty true to actual colors and plentiful - thus the higher price. The text is clearly written, chronologically organized and detailed. Covering 500 years of art and its plentiful illustrations, it is a large book. The paper used is heavy, calendared (glossy) stock so the book is heavy as well. The shipping weight is 5 pounds. But worth the cost and the wear and tear on your backpack.The price charged on Amazon is sometimes as little as half what college bookstores charge so I recommend getting it here rather than on campus.

Definitive. The book is huge and expensive -- but great pictures which, of course, increases the cost. There are other books on the history of American art, most dealing with more specific issues, but this one is the best I've read on general themes. Artists and art movements are discussed in terms of the social and cultural climate of the time.-- quite valuable. There is also extensive coverage of Mexican and Native American art, both as independent genres but also as they affected and were affected by more mainstream currents. Frankly I skipped over a lot of this because it has limited interest for me, but it's there should my cultural biases get overcome. Also covers domestic art (e.g. quilts, sampler, etc.) as well as furniture, photography and architecture -- again skip-able if one wants to make headway in this gigantic book.This is not bedtime reading, but given the scope and complexity, it is quite readable.

This is required reading for my Art History class. At over 550 pages my initial reaction was a groan..I am delighted that my dread was unfounded. It presents the connections between works of artists and the society in which they are created. While it is a college textbook, it has a wealth of information on the art movements in America, and is a realatively easy read. Rich in illustration and color plates even those only moderatly interested in art should find something of value without reading anyting more than captions.

This textbook was required for my upper-division general education requirement and it was a very useful and informative textbook. I actually enjoyed reading the assigned readings and interpreting the various pieces of art in it. Highly recommend for any professor considering this for an art history course or any art student!

Wow! Another incredible book published by Thames and Hudson! I love their art compendiums. Here, the author gives us a Canadian viewpoint on US history that is erudite and fascinating. Huge detailed book yet quite refreshing to read. I'm using it in a History of American Art from a Multicultural Perspective class. Lots of history and beautifully detailed artworks, including timelines. The printing is superb (Singapore). I highly recommend it! Great reading and a wonderful addition to your home library.

Throughout all of Christian history, the question of why God allows suffering has been wrestled with, prayed over, and addressed by Christian laymen and scholars. In Why God Allows Us to Suffer, author Kevin Tewes tries his hand at this age-old question. Unfortunately, his treatment of the issue is dissatisfying on aesthetic, literary, and theological grounds.The first thing that stands out in Tewes’ book is an undercurrent of hubris that spoils even his most savory statements with an aftertaste of pomposity. After his introduction of the classic “trilemma,” (1. God is all powerful, 2. God is all loving, 3. Evil exists), the author surveys briefly some of the classic Christian “solutions,” then proposes to offer his own. Where the problem first rears its head is in the last paragraph of the introduction:In the pages that follow I present an entirely new and comprehensive solution to the most confounding enigma of the Christian faith. This solution, moreover, does what no other proposed explanation to the problem of pain has ever done – it takes an honest (italics his) account of the mindboggling scale, arbitrariness and brutality of suffering that occurs in this world, while remaining wholly consistent with the Bible. Put simply, what follows is the definitive solution to the problem of pain and the problem of evil.So, not only does the author contend that his solution in completely novel (“does what no other proposed explanation. . . has ever done”), but that it is the definitive solution to the issue. In all my years of reading Christian literature, including three years of seminary studies, I have only once encountered an author that approached his work with less humility.The second issue I had with the book has to do with literary style. It is often repetitive, almost as if the author is trying to get to a page-quota by restating his point in another way. This would be reasonable if the reiterations shed further light or examined an issue from different angles, but that is not the case here. Additionally, his footnotes, with rare exception, do not include page numbers. In a theological work this is, quite simply, unacceptable. A critical part of theological dialogue is being able to trace your lines of research and support for your arguments. The omitted page numbers not only break with convention, but make it difficult to engage the work on any serious level.The theological failings of the book are many, and to enumerate all of them would cause more ink to be spilt than I am willing (I have other books to read). The first I will mention is a misrepresentation of the omniscience (all-knowingness) of God. When discussing the fall of Adam and Eve, he writes, “Consider the decision that God faced,” and then he goes on to lay out the “dilemma” God was faced with following the fall. It’s almost as if God was surprised by the act of sin and had to wonder to himself, “What now?” Later, he undermines the deity of Christ, writing that in His suffering, “Christ had no assurance that His suffering and death would serve any meaningful purpose.” Then he suggests that this faithless moment of Christ was necessary because “[l]ove is not possible without faith.” Further, he writes that, “Because Christ’s perfect faith is a necessary condition for the very existence of God, God Himself would have perished had Christ’s faith in the Father failed at Calvary. Thus it is fair to say that ‘everything’ was risked while Christ was on the cross.” This is an affront to the very nature of Christ and the redemption, and to the biblical testimony.The last thing I will address is the premise of Tewes’ “solution.” His solution is that the highest purpose of man’s creation is that man can experience love. This experience of love, he contends, requires the ability to experience pain. For, only free agents are able to love and experience love, and those same free agents are free to choose something other than love, which causes pain. This thesis is problematic for two reasons. First of all, as the Westminster Confession so aptly states, “Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” This is consistent with the biblical record, as well as two millennia of Christian thought. Tewes’ view if frighteningly man-centric and is unrecognizable as sound theology. Second, all Tewes has really done with this argument is to re-tool the “free-will” argument, which he decries as insufficient, and call it by another name.In conclusion, the reader interested in studying the subject matter presented in this book would be far better served reading C.S. Lewis’ The Problem of Pain, or the section of the topic (called theodicies) in virtually any systematic theology. I have a little personal habit when it comes to reading my Kindle books. I normally use yellow as a highlighting color when I find a proposition or statement interesting or informative. Very rarely, when I read something really nonsensical or unacceptable, I use the blue highlighter. This book has more blue in it than a Democrat convention, with precious little yellow interspersed here and there.The book is simply awful. I cannot right now think of a worse book on apologetics, and there are some doozies out there. I am glad to see that several other reviewers found great value in the book, but that experience I could not share in. If this is cutting edge Christian apologetics, especially on this important topic, we have great difficulty ahead. I would hate to see what a knowledgeable atheist would do with this book.After a first few pages of generalities, where Tewes does a fair job of at least creating the impression that he understands the questions to be grappled with, things fall apart very rapidly. Tewes tells us (and with this I largely agree) that previous efforts at theodicies have to a large degree been unsuccessful. He then pins his colors to the mast and tells us unambiguously that he has solved this vexing problem.From here on the book turns into an embarrassing display of circular arguments, poor or wobbly theology, sentimental and / or patronizing pontifications or special pleading. Blue everywhere.If Tewes has any clue about recent scientific developments and how that impacts on Christian doctrines like the Fall and Original Sin, cognitive development, free will and so on, he hides that very well. Other than promising that he will address the problem of natural evil, he deals with that important question only in the most superficial and intellectually insulting manner. If I accept that Tewes is sincere in his presentation, as I am happy to do, I must accept that he is blissfully unaware of how the questions under discussion are framed in modern debate, even by other Christian apologists, much less by non-theists.The end result is a naive, condescending and utterly uninteresting argument that is neither original nor convincing. It is, in my view, all the more offensive for all its huffing and puffing about resolving the problem of evil (or the problem of pain, as Tewes chooses to call it). Not one of his submissions are original.If you have previously found an acceptable solution to this problem (and there are certainly several vastly better books on that available) then this book will not add anything to your knowledge. If you are looking for a glib and easy "solution" and you are prepared to not ask any mildly difficult questions, then by all means go ahead. There is nothing here for the honest, well-informed seeker. The book, and some of the blurbs are shamelessly misleading.

To get straight to the point - I passed on 10 April. Having said that, this was not my only training resource (I also used "A Cloud Guru" and "Linux Academy," both online video training sites).But what this book did do was give me the ability to sit down and read, at my own pace, and fill in the gaps inevitably left by the videos. YES, this book was written for the old interface. It doesn't mean you can't find anything on AWS now. In fact, if UI changes have completely derailed your study of the AWS CSA-A syllabus, then you're probably going to have trouble passing the exam anyway. It's not easy, even the Associate level. I am not a developer, I am a sysadmin. I will quickly become an obsolete dinosaur if I do not get up to speed on the "Dev" side of "DevOps", at least to a baseline degree of competency, and on the world's largest cloud platform.Amazon changes things on AWS at a frightening pace. No book ever published is going to be able to keep up with those changes. But the mechanics, the fundamentals, the underlying frameworks, are still the same. This book will teach you those. I highly recommend you also use a video training course. The video courses I used are for the 2017 exam - and you will never be tested on the UI itself. Having trained for the 2017 exam, I also agreed to take a beta exam (because it was 50% off) when registering on WebAssessor. The exam I took was 80 questions, instead of 60, and included questions on Kinesis, as well as making a clear distinction between NAT Gateways and NAT instances. Lots of VPC questions, lots of EC2, lots of RDS.Bottom line - don't rely on only a single source for study, especially on a platform as vast and complex as AWS. I became very frustrated a few days before my exam. Frankly, I didn't expect to pass. It didn't help that the staff at the Kryterion testing center had never given an Amazon exam before and I saw them refer to handwritten notes repeatedly (!!). You will not receive any sort of hardcopy confirmation that you passed from the testing center, so if they're not really sure what they're doing, stick around and make sure it gets submitted properly. I had an email from Kryterion waiting on me when I arrived home with a PDF of my certificate and the Certified AWS logos you're entitled to use once you pass. I don't even know if I'll receive a paper certificate in the mail!But if you study hard and you do the labs, you can pass. I'm living proof of that.

There's something you need to be aware about this book if you're new to AWS. It seems that it is either outdated (hard to believe given that it was released just a couple of days ago, but maybe they started to be write it years ago and released just now..) or it was written with an outdated version of the AWS site that is served to old AWS clients, which would be understandable if you read the authors bio at the beginning but it's an unforgivable editing oversight since the reader isn't warned about this. I'm just starting but there have been several assumptions made in the book that are just weird. For example they keep telling you to choose either EC2-VPC or EC2-Classic but EC2-Classic isn't available for new clients anymore and they don't tell you this in the book.So far it's a good book and I will update this score when I finish reading it or find another way to contact the authors (I found no contact information regarding errata listed in the book). I was waiting to finish the book before posting but I thought I should let everyone know before everything else is drowned out by the 5 stars reviews written by people that haven't finished reading it either.UPDATE 10/31/2016 (comment I posted answering someone)I haven't taken the exam yet. I'm going to update my review eventually (I haven't finished the book) but the best I can tell you is that I can follow the book more effectively because I previously read: Amazon Web Services in Action they compliment each other very well since the latter is more hands on but doesn't describe the concepts as throughly as I expected it would (this is my review of that book: https://www.amazon.com/review/R35XQT20R1LYWB/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=1617292885) but in a way the same can be said of this one too since it expects you to delve into the online documentation in order to do the exercises at the end of each chapter. For some it's not needed but for others it definitely is if you're completely new to AWS. In a way this book kind of outsources the "In Action" part to the online docs. Which is kind of ridiculous because most people that are looking to learn AWS from a book are doing so specifically to avoid the messiness of the online documentation. Luckily what I learned from the AWS in Action book has saved me from having to go into the online docs for most chapters so far but in others I definitely had to delve into it and do some google searches in order to finish the exercises. If you decide to buy this book you definitely need to read the online resources before going into the exercises because a lot of the practical fundamentals are actually described there (like setting up the CLI interface, etc.). The book is dedicated almost exclusively to describe the theory behind AWS which I take it to mean that that's what the exam does for the most part. This book is the first exam related resource that I read, if I decide to take it I'll have to do some further research.UPDATE 12/01/2016:I just finished the book and sadly, I can't say that it made me change the score. While there's a lot of content crammed inside the book (enough to point you in the right direction when starting AWS) my first observations remained accurate throughout the book, not only that but it got worse in some aspects. For example, some chapters seem like they were taken straight out of the online documentation. The editing is poor and some review questions are just wrong or out of place (in some chapters they ask you something they talk about in a future chapter). Reading other reviews from people that took the exam it seems that it is advisable to do as much online exam prep as possible before taking the exam which is what I'll do next. It's not a complete waste but it's not a silver bullet for learning AWS either. The book doesn't add that much to the online docs so do consider taking a look at it before buying.UPDATE 05/02/2017: As J. Norman says, after a while they do mention in the book that EC2-Classic is no longer available to new clients but it was way after they had already referenced EC2-Classic several times from the beginning of the book. They should've mentioned this fact since the very beginning, otherwise it can be a little bit disorienting.

This guidebook provides great descriptions of the Amazon web services and how they work. The book is meant for passing the Associate Exam for Amazon web services, but it also working as a learning resource for AWS. I bought the book just to learn more rather than take the test, and I was pleased with the content of the book.There are quizzes at the end of each chapter which are fairly challenging. You have to read the chapter very carefully to get all the answers correct. Chapters start on basic AWS services such as EC2 and S3, and the book logically progresses to newer more complicated services. The last chapter focuses on best practices.Language in the book is direct and well written. The book does not feel like it has 7 authors as transitions are seamless from chapter to chapter. I learned a good deal about how the services work. The balance was reasonable between text and diagrams of architecture.Overall, I would recommend this book if you are studying for the exam, or if you are just looking to learn more about AWS.

Elena Delle Donne has been a professional women’s basketball player since 2013, when she was selected by the Chicago Sky second overall in the WNBA draft.
