About the Author

Robert Bissett has been specializing in Monolithic dome design for over ten years. He has a degree in architecture from Washington State University, Summa Cum Laude, 1975. He has a degree in science from the United States Air Force Academy, 1967. In 1972, after five years as a pilot, two in Viet Nam flying helicopters and Caribous, he earned his FAA Airline Transport Rating. When not designing domes, Bob is an artist, author, blogger and teacher. He did the design development and working drawings for Dome of a Home in Pensacola Beach, FL which survived hurricane Ivan and was the subject of a TV special. This is the only book I have found which gives exact details on how to computer design and create workable plans for a dome, especially a concrete dome from the Monolithic folks (purveyors of the coolest domes on the planet), using free software.I have been designing dome floorplans by hand for well over a decade, as I could find no floorplan software which was affordable and worked (I am not spending the ridiculous amounts most people want for 3D or CAD software when a free version can do almost as well, in some cases better). I was intrigued by the possibilities of using SketchUp when it came along, but could not find information which related specifically enough to domes or circular buildings.This book is a tutorial designed specifically for using SketchUp, a free 3D program, (and other programs) to not only create a good floorplan for a dome, but also to be able to create a good 3D model and export the files to other software to create drawings for actual construction. It delivers quite well on that. It does a very good job of describing how to create and manipulate your floorplan using certain features of SketchUp. It is quite detailed on the creation of the model, spacing and measurements, tricks for making the model exact enough to export to CAD programs, making wood or metal framing fit with curved dome walls, window and door spaces, wall placement, modeling layers of the dome to get accurate measurements, and so on. It is precise and extremely useful in creating even a simple 3D model of a dome to scale.It is not a tutorial on everything SketchUp can do. It is not a tutorial on every piece of 3D software out there. It is not for people who already know how to use SketchUp to a high level. It is not for 3D artists and professionals (unless you want some quick shortcuts and don't like to reinvent the wheel). It is certainly not for people who are not computer literate or conversant with current computer technology, free software, or the internet.Most of the complaints in reviews of this book are off-topic or related to unrealistic expectations or the inability to read. There is nothing anywhere on the Amazon page which says anything about including a CD of software. Free software is delivered almost exclusively by way of the internet these days, and this has been the case for over a decade. Expectations so far out of touch with reality should not be the basis for a review.The fact of the matter is that this book does a very good job of showing how to design a good dome floorplan/drawing/model and export those files to other software to create good working drawings. That is exactly what it purports to do, and it does it, period. It is exactly the kind of tutorial information I was looking for, and I am very happy with it.If you are interested in designing a dome, want to create good dome floorplans, or even a fairly accurate drawing or model of your dome in 3D, this book will show you one way to achieve that with software freely available on the net. I am extremely pleased the author has created it, I'm glad I bought it, and I highly recommended it.

it was an interesting read..really allows one to see what goes in to the design of these type structures.

The book is very technical so anyone buying it should have some idea of the aspects of the building trade, in regards to drawings, codes, etc. Other than that it was an excellent book, a good resource and well laid out. I would definitely recommend it.

I am still trying to digest this manual. It is highly technical and requires more computer competence than I posses. If you have extensive computer training you should have no problems.

Bought this book hoping to cut thru the hours required to learn/utilize a software program. First thing author requests the reader to do is download about 5 free online programs, then proceeds to tell you how to use these programs like you know how to already. Very disappointing, as if I wanted to learn a free software program, could have done so without buying this book. Save your $$.

Its a good book to help you design a house using free online software. It tells you where to go to get it.

I don't know anything about these houses, but based on what others have said,these things are aerodynamic and can resist tornadoes. I hope to build one soonas the weather in the USA is extreme due to the Global Warming that is going on.I've already found more books and more info from some of the places I've seen inthe book, these should help out with actually building it.

A great piece to have on the bookshelf for anyone who is interested in reading about the Iran-Iraq war. Being the longest conventional war to happen in the 20th century between any two nations, there is a tremendous amount of historical, military, economic, and political details to cover. However, the author does a superb job of weaving all of these details and information together into a relatively easy to read and interesting narrative.

Good book. Very detailed and very thorough. The writing is a bit choppy because English is not his first language.

I wanted a quick overview of this conflict and this book fulfilled that perfectly. It was refreshing to read a book about the middle east seemingly devoid of any bias. I would recommend this book highly.

An interesting book on a subject that does not have a lot of coverage. It's chapter arrangement by actor is sometimes confusing but in the end I saw why the writer used that method rather than a strictly chronological narrative.One error in the book was that it talked about Reagan campaign staffers meeting with Iranians in Paris prior to November 1980 elections. This story has been debunked by many reliable sources.

Dilip Hiros book on the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980's is up to his usual standard; the facts are presented in an impartial and systematic way giving the reader a thorough if somewhat prosaic account of the lengthy and bloody Iran-Iraq War.The Longest War is divided into four phases, each having a chapter that accounts for the action (political and military) in Iran and Iraq and with an accompanying chapter on the role played by outsiders. The book also puts the war into context with regard to Saddams rise, the Shahs fall and the founding of the Islamic Republic in Iran.Saddam, with support from Saudia Arabia and Kuwait, and a nod and a wink from Washington initiated a war he expected to last weeks against an Iran in turmoil after its 1979 revolution. Instead it dragged on for nearly a decade resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands on each side.Hiro dispassionately reports the developments on each side- the Iraqi attempts to extracate themselves once it became clear that it wouldnt be a walkover, the Iranian Islamic Republic, consolidating itself in the face of the attack from Iraq and sticking out for what in world war 2 terms would be called "total surrender". The outside powers roles are also documentated, the then USSR seems to be constantly reacting to events, half the American government supports Iraq at first tentively and then more overtly including supplying Iraq with intelligence, financial credits and the deeply dubious Donald Rumsfield aswell as militarily intervening in the Gulf. The other half of the American government is meanwhile selling Arms to the Iranians to fund their murderous war in Central America. The British, Germans, French, Swedes, Israelis are selling arms willy nilly in pursuit of profit to one side or the other.There are interesting comparisons on how the two countries made war, the Iraqis got into debt with the West and the Gulf States for tens of billions of dollars, in stark contrast the Iranians had a national debt of only $500million at the end of the war. They saw, correctly, that getting into debt would compromise their independence and their Islamic Revolution. To the Iranians credit they never reduced themselves to Saddams level by resorting to Chemical Weapons (the Ayatollah was against it).If a criticism of Hiro writing can be made it is that it will not have you sitting on the edge of your seat. It is calm, matter of fact, thorough and a valuable account of the Iran Iraq war which has tended to be overlooked given the recent turmoil in the region.

In my opinion, the definitive account of the Iran-Iraq War has yet to be written, and in fact probably never will be. The destruction of Iraq (including much state/historical documentation), and the difficulty of interviewing major participants on both sides of the conflict (several are already dead), have made this a near-impossible task.Nevertheless, Dilip Hiro's book provides an excellent source on the conflict. He bases most of his research on newspaper articles, official documents and speeches, and his own extensive war reporting. His account therefore relates an insider's view of the war, written by someone who witnessed the course of events on the ground. The book is organized on a chronological basis, offering first a reflection on the causes of the war before moving on to a detailed recounting of events, and ends with a final chapter of personal conclusions. Hiro does not hesitate to supplement his historical narrative with personal analysis. He does a good job of backing up his interpretations by using statistics, charts, economic data, etc. The maps he provides are adequate but by no means exceptional. There is also a section of approximately thirty photographs; however their print quality is extremely poor and diminishes their analytical value.The author attempts to remain neutral in his work, and generally tries to base his investigation on facts. The war is clearly portrayed as having been triggered by Iraq, with the tacit support of the US and its allies in the Gulf. Hiro makes it clear that this constituted an attempt to smother the Iranian Revolution, and that it ended up seriously backfiring. Instead of inspiring the Iranians to oust Khomeini, the war had the opposite effect and united the population in support of his new regime. Saddam also seriously underestimated the manner in which the Iraqi Shia population would react to the war - a mistake which nearly ruined him, and partially explains his resort to chemical weapons. Two chapters are devoted to Iraqi and Iranian perspectives, detailing the political, social and military aspects of the war in each country.This work also vividly illustrates the scope of foreign meddling and interference in the war. The author produces a very thorough assessment of the conflict in an international context. Iraq reprized the role previously held by Iran in America's network of client states in the region (this lasted until the first Gulf War). Iran was systematically hampered in achieving its objectives due to its very low prestige on the international scene (its main trading partner was West Germany). The Soviets - who had originally planned to ally with both Iraq and Iran to stabilize the Afghan situation - were increasingly worried about US intervention, and gradually adopted a policy of containment towards the Iranian Revolution. All these points are elaborately discussed in the book.Moreover, Hiro does an excellent job of emphasizing the central importance of oil and weapons sales. Attacks against tankers (the 'Tanker War') in the Persian Gulf are well-documented, as are the nepotism and corruption of western governments. Unfortunately, the famous photo of Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam in December 1983 is not included. I was also slightly disappointed by the rather cursory explanation of the Iran-Contra Affair. Apart from these minor drawbacks, the book is generally impartial and does enough to serve its purpose.In conclusion, I would strongly recommend this work to those who are interested in the Iran-Iraq War. It offers the best general survey of the conflict I have come across. If you wish to concentrate on military matters, then Efraim Karsh's book is probably better. Both works should be complemented by articles from academic journals for further in-depth analysis.

Dark Souls III: Design Works is a nice art book with lots of large, high quality concept art from the game. There are a handful of pieces from each area, each enemy, each boss, each weapon, etc. What's missing is accompanying text and interviews!Previous Dark Souls Design Works books had long interviews with key staff who worked on the games and provided fascinating insight into their development. This one has none of that. Other than the name of each area/boss/etc., there's virtually no other text, which is a real disappointment.If you just want to see some art, this book is great. But if you want more than that - if you enjoyed the deeper look into Dark Souls development provided by the first two Design Works books - this book will be a big letdown.

Great artwork and design book. Has everything from the base DS3 all the way through both DLC's.Sadly poor packaging struck again. The spine on the book was bent and crinkled. Some pages were warped.

Sad that none of the other Dark souls design works have featured interviews with the developers like the first did, but this is still a great book that features a lot of amazing concept art.

I was pleasantly surprised by the volume of this tome and how much content it has. It's the biggest of the trilogy of Dark Souls Design Works!

The artwork in this book is beautiful. However, I already knew it would be which I why I bought the book in the first place. The book arrived with the protective plastic ripped and several large dents on the sleeve and cover. This is a collector's item and it is unacceptable for it to arrive damaged.

Bought as a gift for a friend, loved the series and played all three with and still plays. Also got the first one last Christmas for them since they had the second one already. In total they have the complete set and a great Christmas for a gaming buddy.

I don't need to repeat the story-line here as other reviewers have done so. All I can add is that this book, especially when it gets to the storm itself and its incredible impact, held me spellbound. Larson is brilliant at presenting history as it can be: remarkable stories that are not a long list of "name/place/date" but an exploration of situation, connections, character, emotion, outcomes - fact, not fiction, with sources noted, of course - that draw one in and keep one immersed through to end. After reading a "history" by another author (different subject entirely) I longed for Larson's exploration of same, knowing that I would care more, remember more, and understand the connections that drive events more than the endless drivel of who begat whom, etc.(often only good for source material, it seems). Imagine what Larson's writings on the French Revolution, St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, the Boer War - oh, anything - would be. He takes an event and builds the world around that event - and one leaves his arena with a deeper understanding of the world he explores than few others can or do provide.

A Review by Anthony T. Riggio of “Issac's Storm” by Erik Larson, 8-3-15I have read most of Larson's books on historical events and have never been disappointed. Issac's Storm brought home to me the destructive power of a hurricane and the fact that we are blessed today by superb forecasting technology and tracking of storms. Living by the Gulf of Mexico, I am always anxious when a storm of any kind, is forecasted by the National weather services, and our local weather people. I have lived through several category 1 storms. I built my house to withstand up to a category 4 storm and possibly a category 5. I would not sit out a storm forecasted at a 2 or higher.In the case of Issac's storm in 1900, that hit Galveston, Texas, it was estimated to be close to a category 5. at that time the National Weather Service was a budding and infant service dependent on oral relays of information from ships at sea or island in the Caribbean, specifically Cuba and other smaller Islands. Ship to shore telegraph was still too new to be of help leaving word of mouth by the sea captains. once information was obtained about a gathering storm, appropriate warnings were supposed to be communicated to the residents of the probable impact sites.Unfortunately, politics always comes into play especially with a budding service whose reputation was at risk and its confidence by the public and the need for funding. The National Weather Service had weather reporting stations at storm vulnerable locations throughout the United States and representatives were constantly communicating barometric, temperature and wind calculations to the Weather Service's headquarters in Washington. Because of both politics and funding issues the word "hurricane" was forbidden to be communicated because of the variable shifts in weather fronts.Forecasting was more of an art than a scientific prediction. The weather chief in Galveston was both and educated weather person as well as being a physician. His name was Issac Cline and he sensed the coming storm but was on delicate territory in expressing the need for greater danger to the residents of Galveston whose topography was only about five feet above sea level and while local politicians talked about a sea wall because of previous storms, the idea was put into a bureaucratic filing drawer.Erik Larson lays out a compelling story based on his usual and extensive research and puts the reader into the minds of the characters in the book, which were all real people. The reader will feel the growing tensions of the arriving storm and feel the wind, rain and flood ofGalveston. The reader will feel pity for Issac Cline and disgust for his bosses in Washington DC.Normally because of our up to the minute forecasting and tracking of hurricanes we feel great comfort and have the time and ability to prepare and evacuate if necessary. The number of casualties and deaths as described by Larson are shocking and good and bad of humanity is clearly demonstrated. lIn those days they did not "name" storms and I suppose the author named it Issac's storm because of his responsibility as a employee of the National Weather Bureau and the amount of personal blame that would be open to public criticism. The book was well written and I highly recommend it to those who enjoy history presented, as Larson so skillfully does in each of his works. I do not hesitate to award five stars to this work.

I loved Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, but was disappointed by In The Garden of Beasts and Thunderstruck. I seem to have been on a weather disaster kick for a while, so I ordered Isaac's Storm. This is one of those books that is so good, you don't want it to end--in fact, when I finished it, I started reading it again immediately. The research, the intrigue, the drama---way better than a novel for me, because this all happened. In the two other Erik Larson books I mentioned, it appears he got bogged down in the details of one of the dual plots and though you knew they were related to each other, by the time you got to the end, you didn't much care about the people involved. In Isaac's Storm, you'll even care about the prelude to the hurricane of raining frogs. Usually, when I "loan" a book to somebody, I don't care much if I get it back or not. This one has my name in it!

Terrific book about what to look for in 911's and 912's now that they are collector items. The pricing in the book is outdated, but a simple google search for any buyer would keep them up to date. The information inside this book is priceless.

Good overview. You have to take some of the pricing w/ a grain of salt b/c of the recent increase in prices. Some good pictures along with detailed descriptions.

Very informative. The author attempts to give an unbiased perspective of the rights of women for modern law. She does seem biased and opinionated to some extent but I think this is probably difficult to avoid when discussing women's rights and welfare. I used this in a political science course and felt it was good for explaining the current state of affairs on these issues.

I needed this book for a class. Otherwise I probably would not have ordered it. It does give good insight of how many issues affect women.
