After reading all the nice reviews, I might give this another try. Some day. But my first impression was terrible. I was expecting thrills and mystery and intrigue along the lines of John Grisham, JD Robb, John Sanford, Sue Grafton, etc. But the very first sentence of just the Prologue lost me -- his skintight jeans, his long brown hair, his t-shirt riding up his ribcage.. No, no.. I don't want a Fabio "romance novel" -- I was excited about a new perspective from a clever intelligent savvy new author. This book is not what I thought I was purchasing. I may glance thru it again sometime, at least to finish the Prologue and some of Chapter 1, but it's currently at the bottom of the pile of my other fabulous available readings.

This review is posted at both Amazon and Goodreads. Our protagonist, Rachel Knight, is a Los Angeles Special Trials District Attorney. The story opens with Rachel celebrating a big win with her colleagues, Toni and Jake. Jake and Rachel are both workaholics, spending many hours, often late into the night, together discussing cases. Rachel and Jake relationship is strictly business and Rachel has the utmost respect for Jake. Toni and Jake call it quits for the day leaving Rachel behind who plans to work a while longer. As Rachel is walking home from the office she passes a crime scene at a seedy motel. While trying to find out what happened, Rachel sees Jake being taken away in a body bag. The cops think it was a murder-suicide, that Jack shot a 17 year old boy then himself. Rachel not believing the cop's theory decides to look into Jake's death. One of Jake's cases is reassigned to Rachel, a rape where a 16 year old girl was accosted in her own home. Between investigating the rape case and finding the truth about Jake's death Rachel has her hands full. This is a well written mystery. The plot moves along at a good pace and the story has many twist and turns as one would expect. Marcia Clark, former Los Angeles District Attorney, brings her DA experience to the book and especially to Rachel's character. Rachel's character is believable and through her you get to know what a DA does day in and day out. Rachel is also a very likable character, you get to know her as a committed, strong, intelligent, hard working individual who also is very witty, loyal, and fun to be around. The reason I rated this 4 stars instead of 5 is that Rachel is obsessed with her diet, analyzing every piece of food that she eats, which became really annoying.I read this book in one day simply unable to put it down. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good crime story with a strong female lead. I'll definitely being the next book in this series.

This book is written by former DA Marcia Clark and I really enjoyed it very much. All the characters are great and you can really relate to them. This is about Rachael Knight a Special Trials DA looking for answers as to who killed her young co-worker Jake along with a 17 year old boy. The scene is made to look like a murder, sucide but was it really? Also Rachael is under pressure to solve a high profile rape of a young teenage girl. A great book.

I'm a big fan of Marcia's writing and feel tremendous empathy towards the ordeal the whole OJ thing put her through... poor girl unfairly fried in the media!!But this book let me down... couldn't even finish it. Too much "girly, girly" stuff, details above and beyond the call... forgot what the plot was supposed to be about by 89% finished... and by then didn't really care.

I just read "Guilt by Association" and could not put it down! I got it free from Pixels of Ink, and liked it so much I immediately went to Amazon and bought her other novels and pre-ordered the one Marcia has coming out.Good character development, good plot, hugely surprised at the outcome, this book kept my interest from the first page to the last.Marcia didn't even irk me with misspelled words and bad grammar - a HUGE problem in most books I read on my Kindle. Of course, she is working with an established publisher, so maybe they actually have someone proofread. One thing I would ask of Miss Clark - leave the political crap in your office. I am beyond tired of writers who find it necessary to slam conservatives in some way in every book, even if it has nothing to do with the plot. She did it briefly in "Guilt by Association," and I'm seeing it again in "Guilt by Degrees." In doing this, you offend at least half of your potential audience, and it is completely unnecessary. Do the publishers require this, or are the authors so biased that they don't even realize they are doing it?

I am sometimes leery of females writing detective novels simply because so many detectives are male and the "voices" for those characters clank. No problem here. First, most of her characters are female and the males are relating to the women in a flirty way so I assume she has that type of interaction absolutely correct. (I hate sounding so sexist here; I am guessing many women find that women's "voices" sound just as bad coming from the pens of male writers.) OK, that was a long-winded, maybe pointless preamble to the novel itself. The novel is very well plotted, all of the characters seem authentic, the pace never flags and the banter between her protagonist and several other characters, both male and female, is lots of fun! Big plus: nothing seems forced.I don't know that I had any particular expectations of Ms Clark as a novelist but, I *will* be reading her others. It was quite satisfying.Give it a shot! I think you will enjoy it!
