She graduated from Long Beach State, where she was a vital member of the 1998 NCAA Championship team and received the Honda-Broderick Award for the nation’s collegiate female athlete of the year. After a brief stint with the U.S. national indoor team, she went on to revolutionize the sport of beach volleyball, becoming the best women’s player ever. This is a pretty in-depth autobiography about Misty growing up in California and all through her first 3 olympics. There are several things she says she's never told publicly until this book. It can get pretty long at some parts but also I felt like i needed to have a highlighter on hand because she says some very inspirational things and life lessons. She has a very unique story and this book is definitely worth reading because there's so much of a background to her I never would have guessed.The book was in very good condition and came pretty fast after I ordered it.

I find that one of the best ways to judge books is by the "bother your spouse" factor. Typically my wife is reading some book on a topic that I don't care for, and she'll interrupt me "Can I read you a passage?" or quote me some one-liner from her book that she found interesting. Over the course of a novel, she'll typically "bother" me, let's say, five times. My response is typically to chuckle, more often than not, just to humor her. I rarely "bother" her when I'm reading.I found Misty's new book "Digging Deep..." so entertaining that for the first time I found myself "bothering my spouse" frequently. It seemed like I "bothered" her over 10 times, to share a line or a story from the book. Some of it was sharing insights into the depths of the volleyball world, and some of it was just hilarious stories that Misty has experienced.Misty's book reminds me of the promo line from an old movie entitled "Stuart Saves His Family". The line goes: "You'll laugh because it's not your family, and you'll cry because it is." I did find myself laughing out loud, as well as having tears well up in my eyes while reading Misty's book.I highly recommend Misty's book for its unprecedented "bother your spouse" factor. It's "bother your spouse" factor is so high that my wife can't wait to read it.

Misty May-Treanor is one of the most successful professional volleyball players in the history of the sport. She's won over 100 tournaments, two Olympic gold medals, numerous accolades, etc. etc.I have been a fan of May-Treanor since the 1990s. I immediately pre-ordered my copy of her autobiography via Amazon.com. I wanted to compare her biography to other notable volleyball legends, Sinjin Smith and Karch Kiraly.Overall, I would say her autobiography supplanted Smith and Kiraly's efforts as my top favorites to the top spot. Without giving away too many details, her book offers insight into her upbringing, personal life with her husband (pro baseball player, Matt Treanor), moments of greatness and sadness (you might want to have tissues near you) as well as offering life lessons.This is a wonderful and inspirational book for any sports fan (especially young women).

I DID LIKE THIS BOOK BUT IT DOES REPEAT ITSELF A BIT TOO OFTEN. I THINK MISTY DOES A NICE JOB OVERALL AND THE BOOK IS WORTH READING. I REALLY FELT FOR HER WHEN TELLING ABOUT HER PARENTS BEING ALCOHOLICS. BOTH WOULD EVENTUALLY STOP BUT MISTY WHEN THRU SOME TRULY SCARY TIMES. HER DAD HAS BEEN A BIG SUPPORTER AND A STRENGTH IN HER LIFE. AFTER HER MOM DIED, SHE WAS DEPRESSED AND MISSED HER VERY BADLY. WHEN SHE MET MATT TREANOR, MISTY MET A BIG PART OF HER FUTURE. MATT WAS A VERY STABILIZING EFFECT ON HER. MISTY DOES NOT SLAM ANYONE IN THIS BOOK BUT A FEW SHOULD BE. HER EX PARTNER HOLLY WAS A PUSHY PAIN IN THE ASS WHO RAN THEIR TRAINING AS IF THEIR LIFE WAS AT STAKE. SHE IS ONE WHO SHOULD BE SLAMMED ALONG WITH AN EX COACH WHO GAVE MISTY THE WRONG ADVICE AND COST HER A SHOULDER INJURY. MISTY AND KERRY HAVE WON 2 GOLD MEDALS WHICH IS AMAZING. I ALSO LIKED HER TELLING ABOUT BEING ON DANCING WITH THE STARS. MISTY TRULY IS A GREAT PLAYER. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR GOSSIP OR SMUT, YOU WILL NOT FIND IT HERE. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR EVERYONE BUT MOSTLY FOR FEMALES.

I love Misty May Treanor and I am still working my way through the book. I thought I would fly through it based on enjoying her story. Instead, I find I am flying through it because there is a lot of repetition. So far, a lot of statistics of Misty's personal volleyball highlights (number of digs, kills, spikes, sets, etc). It is somewhat interesting but it reads like a lot of the "jock" books do. Not a lot of depth. It seems like every page she repeats what a gracious, caring and giving person she is. I already knew that and don't need to read it on every page. Hoping for a surprise in the book and will update my review if anything changes.

I have read most of Sowell's books, and I think this is his best. In this book, his various strands of thought and wisdom, which are many indeed, come together as a coherent philosophical statement. It is difficult to review a Sowell book, as the very act of reducing his text to a few sentences squeezes out of it most of the hard-won insight. So, I should just say that this is a solid 5-star one-of-a-kind required-reading book, and leave it at that. But I can't..."Intellectuals and Society" offers a fascinating tour into the worldview of today's leftist intellectuals: how they think, why they think what they think, and where their elitist, anti-Western, pro-government-meddling ideas came from. The book basically boils down to two core themes.First, intellectuals (that is, people whose job output is ideas, as opposed to engineers, doctors, and scientists) are, as opposed to other professions (where people are directly accountable to patients, customers, etc.) answerable only to themselves. That is, tenured professors, elite media professionals and the like publish and then comment on each others' work, feeding off this internally-generated feedback for career success and personal gratification, answering to and conversing with few outside their credentialed circle, and in the process divorcing themselves further and further from the common sense ideas and traditions of society at large that are usually rooted in "what works". Intellectuals disdain "what works" because it originates in the mundane, everyday activities of the uncredentialed masses and offers no opportunities for advancement through idea generation or feelings of intellectual superiority. As journalists, teachers, and others on the outer rim of the intellectual class propagate the ideas of the idea-generators and get rewarded for it with grants, promotions, and self-esteem, the ideology developed and advanced in a vacuum by intellectuals trudges on, century after century. All of this would be irrelevant if public intellectuals were doing no harm. But as Sowell points out, intellectuals cannot exist at room temperature. They must constantly challenge the "conventional wisdom", that is, everything that works and has been tested, because they have no root canals to perform, bridges to design, or businesses to run; their only path to fame and status is the shocking new idea that gets people upset or outraged. There is thus a constant drive within the intellectual class to challenge, prod, change, redesign, and in the end, overturn and oversee the lives of the common folk, whom they disdain for their simplicity and adherence to traditions. Intellectuals are the quintessential people who cannot leave well enough alone, because to do so would be to put their entire cohort out of a purpose and out of a job.Second, intellectuals' lack of tangible output other than words leads them to have a huge need for recognition for being intellectually superior to the masses. A doctor can see patients and do what thousands of doctors have done for hundreds of years, and feel pretty good about it, without being "better" than anyone else. An engineer can do what engineers do, and be satisfied in doing it about as well as other engineers. An intellectual, in contrast, has no prestige or status aside from the public recognition that the intellectual knows more than other people and is better able to solve big societal problems. This leads to a continual search for new social mega-problems to solve, with new untested mega-solutions that exist only in the realm of ideas and usually fail upon implementation. Sowell explores this basic idea from roughly 1900 to the present, detailing how lefty intellectuals have pretty much blown it every time, from misguided belligerence leading up to WW1, to misguided support of communism as millions died of starvation and in labor camps in Russia, to misguided pacifism in the 20's that led to overconfidence and belligerence on Hitler's part and thus WW2, to misguided defeatism in the cold war and Vietnam, to the present misguided defeatist, pacifistic self-loathing we see all around us. Sowell's argument is, ultimately, that intellectuals' separation from the society for which they feel contempt, and their boundless belief in their own superior ability to solve problems solely within the realm of logic and separated from practical experience is, in fact, very dangerous.Sowell's book is so thoughtful, insightful, and well thought out that it really left me wondering: what would someone from the left think of this book? Not some DailyKos type who reflexively responds to conservatism with aggressive, ill-considered platitudes, but a thoughtful person of the left who actually reads and ponders Sowell's work? I just don't know. I don't actually know many people on the left, because I find them too irritating. I found the book extremely interesting and compelling, and highly recommend it.

Sowell's thesis is simple and clearly stated: intellectual elites and experts are not to be blindly trusted. Nassim Nicholas Taleb has said much the same thing in his works while avoiding the blunt and politically incorrect implications. That an intellectual can criticize other intellectuals without offering a prescriptive way out of an imagined "impasse," as one perplexed reviewer opined, is hardly a disqualifying conundrum. No one criticized Aristophanes for lampooning Socrates and the intellectual class of ancient Athens when he wrote The Clouds 2,500 years ago. The question Sowell poses can be summarized by reference to Sidney Hook who allegedly asked Albert Einstein: "I don't lecture you about physics; why to you lecture me about politics?"That's the point of Intellectuals and Society. Sowell takes the pronunciamentos of the high and mighty, the great and gifted, and scrutinizes them against outcomes. In chapter after chapter on issues ranging from inner city crime to economics, to international security, he uses this method to measure stated goals with actual results. This method is hardly unusual in scholarly circles. Although trained as a quantitative economist, Sowell uses well-established ethnographic and comparative interpretations to arrive at his conclusions. In the end, he makes a convincing case that his theory (borrowed from Hayek) of expert knowledge (deep and narrow) versus accumulated common knowledge (broad, and nuanced) has validity.Given that social action is inherently complex, dynamic, and virtually limitless in its permutations, the book demonstrates the risks of expert knowledge. Where Sowell, in my opinion, slips is in his analysis of war and international security situations. Here, the role of deception and misperception often influence outcomes and even copious amounts of post hoc research may only produce more questions and uncover more enigmas. Thus, Sowell's narrative of Germany after World War I is conventional and predictable while scholars such as Gerhard Weinberg have themselves challenged this view for years by, among other things, claiming that Germany got off relatively lightly at Versailles and not, as received opinion holds, that Versailles punitive terms played a significant role in the run-up to World War Two.These minor demurrals aside, I still recommend the work if only for the description of the characterization of social knowledge and its impact on society.

Really enjoyable bit of urban fantasy noir.Refreshing urban fantasy that eschews the traditional Masquerade style tropes to put its supernatural elements to the foreground, in an almost indulgent manner. Characters have very soap-operaesque names like Rune Saint John, but it once you get past the floweriness of it, you see it works in favor of the narrative. These are not magical beings lurking in the shadows, carrying secrets upon secrets they can never reveal. These people are privileged and conspicuous, at times even ostentatious about their magical power and it helps paint a picture of a very different kind of world, almost a mystical Great Gatsby-like world that seems dangerously on the precipice of self-destructing from its own lack of restraint.The main character, Rune, provides a witty and sardonic counterpoint to his world's rarified existence, and he and his companions craft a quip-a-minute narrative that is very reminiscent of the works of Jim Butcher or Joss Whedon. There is also a very welcome amount of queer representation in the book, always written positively and matter-of-factly but with a great deal of honesty.The book's tarot imagery is also a lot of fun, although you don't need to be well versed in the cards to understand them. Furthermore, the worldbuilding and magic system is incredibly fresh and engaging, and it syncretizes a number of real world occult concepts together into something unique and distinct.The book does have a few problems that I'm willing to chalk up to being standard "first novel" issues; there is a lot of information presented all at once towards the beginning and the story (correctly) takes a "show, don't tell" approach, but it still can be a little disorienting and require you read carefully not to miss a detail for when it is expounded upon later on. There is some dialogue that is a hair too bantery, a few places where the prose is a smidge purple, but there are way more hits than misses. However, by the 90 page mark I was on track and eager for more, with minimal confusion and maintaining a good pace. I fully anticipate the next installments in the series will refine these issues and deliver a really solid, and most importantly, fresh and unique take on the urban fantasy genre that is also rich with lore and engaging, non-preachy queer positivity.

4.5 stars. I gave this book 4.5 stars because it could have used a last pass by the copy editor and I just have to take something off for that lack of attention to detail. Besides this book was so good that the author really should have given it that last bit off polish. Even so, I rarely give five stars and I usually take a full star off for proofing, but I just couldn’t punish this book because it was too excellent. The writing, while not as laugh-out-loud funny as Jim Butcher, was as clever as Jim Butcher. They world was original and imaginative, and well-realized. There wasn’t a lot of superfluous exposition, but I felt I understood how the world worked at all times. In the rare instances that it was a little unclear, it was also unclear to the characters just what was happening, so it was relevant. The plot was fast-paced yet left time for character development, backstory, and exploration of the different relationships between characters. And the characters themselves were engaging, sympathetic, funny, and well-differentiated. My only quibble about them is that I didn’t get a good sense of what most of them looked like. That’s not really important to the integrity of the story, and a lot of readers probably don’t mind, but I like physical descriptions to help me get a good mental picture of the person. Each character had a very different voice, however, so it was easy to differentiate them as one is reading. I liked how the plot turned out, and didn’t see the twists coming. The ending gave a resolution to immediate events but also raised some more questions to be explored in coming books (I really hope this turns into a long series), without leaving a cliffhanger. Lastly, this is a fantasy with a gay protagonist, like Mercedes Lackey’s Last Herald Mage trilogy, not a book about being gay or a gay fantasy romance. Don’t read this if you’re looking for an explicit romance, read it because it’s an awesome urban fantasy. You’ll be disappointed if you’re looking for sex scenes, but you’ll be excited by the story and characters themselves. Just read it. Then go put the next book on your list to be picked up the minute it’s available.
