This is absolutely the perfect gift for a newly pregnant friend or family member! I remember being terrified by the clinical feeling of all the things that could go wrong thanks to books like "What to Expect When Expecting" - but this book keeps it easy going and helps to ease that constant feeling of worry! It's fun (seriously, everyone should know about the padscicle before they are frantically googling for relief!) but also bursting with real down to earth information from multiple resources! It will empower you to handle those comments from strangers and unsolicited advice as well as figuring out what your goals are for your pregnancy, delivery, and marriage during this chapter of your life. Jill Krause did an outstanding job on this adorable book - it's a must have to treat yourself or your pregnant loved one with!

I love logic and organization, so the idea of a checklist for my first pregnancy sounded absolutely perfect. I couldn't even make it through the first third of this book before returning it in disgust. Given this, I can only speak for the first bit, but that was all feel-good generalized junk. Also, as a medical practitioner, I was disturbed at the advice that obese women should find an OB who says weight is not at all a risk in pregnancy -- it absolutely is and finding someone who will lie to you about that is positively foolish.

This is an adorable book full of great advice. I wish it had existed when I was a first-time mom, since the casual, chatty tone is a much more helpful tactic than the scary, worst-case-scenario advice in many pregnancy books. When you're pregnant, so much is out of your control that having a list of 50 things you can do, plan, or think about is a great way to feel like you're on top of everything. Put this book on your registry or give it to the new mom you know!

This book provided some generic information that was good to know but it was all very top level. It would raise an issue as something to look into but then tell you nothing further. If you really want answers, facts, statistics, etc., do NOT go with this book.

Love this book! I'm 4 months pregnant and am half way through the book. Lots of great information, suggestions and advice as well as some humor to keep it interesting! Highly reccomend!

I guess I'm more serious than most. I liked this book, especially the padsicle (!) However most of the other stuff were not very new information or informative in any way. Different strokes for different folks. This was not my best read as a first time expectant mom.

Amy Herzog is such a fantastic writer, the subject matter is tough stuff and she handles it with great care. Every character is tightly drawn, every word is important.

Intriguing tension that remains tantalizingly unresolved.

The story was decent, and well-written but the ending killed it for me. There are good open endings and bad open endings. This was a bad open ending. There wasn't enough closure to the story for me. And the elements at the very end felt a little forced. Some people may really like the way it ends, but I found it frustrating. The open endings of plays like, "Oleanna" or "Doubt" were done in a way where you walked away really thinking things through and weighing things out... having meaningful discussions with others after seeing it. The ending with this show was just frustrating and disappointing after really enjoying where the story was going up until that point.

Enjoyed it, but something is missing from the whole. I think it comes from the lack of character development in the supporting characters of Paige, Frank, and the parents.

I liked everything. It took my breath away. This was the first time in my life that I really felt alive.

I bought this for my 3-year-old daughter who loves Welcome to the Symphony: A Musical Exploration of the Orchestra Using Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. She loves classical music, and being able to make it play by herself is awesome. Unlike Welcome to the Symphony, however, the buttons aren't really buttons. Rather, there's a round circle printed on each spread that you are supposed to push. Unfortunately, this mechanism isn't the best for little readers. If the page is just off or you're holding the book on your lap just so, it's impossible to get the music to play. It's a major problem for my daughter who wants to "do it myself." We've worked out a way to do it together, but sometimes I even struggle to make it play.If you can get past the tricky "button," The Story Orchestra really is worth buying. The story is charming and the illustrations are beautiful. Each spread is intricate and perfectly paired with movements from the Four Seasons. The music clips, too, are lovely. We can spend 20 minutes with just this one book.

I bought both books "Four Seasons..." and "The Nutcracker" (2nd book from the different seller). I like them, the cover is beautiful and content is great, but I agree with some other reviewers, the technical part of the book is not performing very well for child, at least for my child. The sound buttons are hidden below the pages and they are not sensitive even for adults. I torn off the carton cover and scissored out the buttons circles. Then I've glued the cover back. At least the buttons became sensitive enough for child fingers.

BEAUTIFUL!!!! I love the story, following a little girl and her puppy through the seasons. The illustrations are beautiful, such color and movement fills each page. The music of Vivaldi completes the picture as each piece really goes with the picture or mood of the season. There is information on each piece of Vivaldi's music in the back of the book, as well as a little "quiz" to see if the child can guess which season each piece of music goes with in the back of the book. This was a fun little challenge my son enjoyed. Pressing the music "button" was a little tricky sometimes while we were laying in bed reading, but that is my one and only minor complaint! My 6 year old son and I truly enjoyed this interactive story!!

This is an absolutely beautiful book and a wonderful introduction to Vivaldi's Four Seasons. There "plot" essentially follows a girl through a day in her village during which she experiences all of the different seasons, each accompanied by excerpts from the corresponding movements of Vivaldi's concerti. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and the musical excerpts actually sound quite good -- not an audiophile experience by any means, but not as tinny or annoying as I expected. Everything about the book seems high quality: the pages have a nice heft and texture to them, the illustrations have bright vivid colors, and the binding is strong and sturdy. It's almost a piece of art.My only small complaint is that the buttons which trigger the music can be difficult to push, especially for small fingers. The circuit board is contained within the back cover of the book, so activating the sounds sometimes requires transmitting the pressure through 8-10 pages of the book, which is not easy for 18-month-old fingers! I suspect the only other option would be to have buttons contained in each page, which would obviously make the entire book much thicker.The bottom line, though, is that my daughter loves this gorgeous book and wants to read it several times a day, and that makes ME happy!

I home school my children and we are just starting to study composers. I am not a musical mom. I didn't grow up watching/ hearing orchestras or taking any kind of music lessons. I knew I didn't want that for my kids but also didn't really know where to start. These books have not only made my kids want to hear more of the real songs but me as well.We love Nutcracker one too and are hoping they put out more like this.Some reviews talk about the buttons being hard to oush. It was for my kids at first but not anymore because they have figured it out u even my one year old can do the ones at the back!

One of my friend's daughters received this book for Christmas and when I saw it i knew I wanted to purchase it for my 3 year old. He loves classical music and as an adult i was drawn to the beautiful artwork. I am absolutely amazed at the beauty that the illustrator, Jessica Courtney-Tickle has created on every page. I am excited to purchase anything else she has illustrated. It is a true masterpiece and is perfect to go alongside Vivaldi's musical and timeless masterpiece. I agree with another reviewer who said that it is a little difficult for my toddler to press the buttons, but that just makes a good excuse to snuggle on the couch and join in with him to read. Something I know i'll never regret doing. The story that goes along with the music and pictures is so cute too. Definitely recommend this book.

Overall I recommend this book and would like to get the other two in the series eventually. It's really great how the music is described and explained for the kids (and for me too!). My 2 year old son particularly loves the two storm song clips and wants to play them repeatedly. Yes the buttons are an issue. They're very hard to push and I usually have to flip to the back page and push them directly. Also, the book lacked a cover page on the inside which I thought seemed a little odd and abrupt. But overall it's a beautiful book and the illustrations are detailed with much to look at and enjoy. Best of all is how much my son loves to read it!

One of the reasons I'm drawn to fiction set in the West is that the good stuff, the really good stuff, brings this part of the world to life. It is a vivid, harsh, beautiful place that rarely nurtures but often rewards anyone who can handle it.Many of the characters can handle it in Claire Vaye Watkins's brilliant stories in Battleborn, which are set in Nevada and Northern California. They just don't know they can handle it until circumstances point it out to them abruptly.That's certainly the case in "The Last Thing We Need". Thomas Grey, who lives out in the Middle of Nowhere, finds the debris of what may have been a wreck and writes to the man whose name and address he finds on some prescription bottles. Even though he has a wife and two children, he lives mostly with his thoughts. And, because the man he is writing to has not answered, Thomas Grey begins to relay his thoughts:"This is our old joke. Like all our memories, we like to take it out once in a while and lay it flat on the kitchen table, the way my wife does with her sewing patterns, where we line up the shape of our life against that which we thought it would be by now."I'll tell you what I don't tell her, that there is something shameful in this, the buoying of our sinking spirits with old stories."And later:"On second thought, perhaps sometimes these things are best left by the side of the road, as it were. Sometimes a person wants a part of you that's no good. Sometimes love is a wound that opens and closes, opens and closes, all our lives."Grey finds out that there is something he cares very much about besides the past. He can handle where he is and what he has.Other characters need to leave to reach that epiphany. One leaves a brother to his own devices after his sibling is enthralled by something else out in the land where gold was hunted and where gamblers still believe they will come out on top. Another has been depending on her sister and reaches a point where, perhaps, her sister can now depend on her.Others are not so successful. Not all attempts by the men to be heroic succeed, as one old-time miner discovers. Not all attempts by the women to let go of the past succeed.For all of them, the men and the women, the ones who thrive and the ones who barely survive, promises matter. In a story, "The Diggings", set during the Gold Rush, a 49'er explains:"A promise unkept will take a man's mind. It does not matter whether the promise is made by a woman or a territory or a future foretold. ... Because though I was afraid and angry and lonesome much of the time, I was also closer to my own raw heart there in the territory than I have ever been since."

graphic modern fiction set in watkins' home state of nevada. watkins' father spent some time with the manson family, until he fled the colony and moved to nevada. i purchased this book to read that one story she wrote about that period in her life, but the rest of the book contains stories that, in my opinion, were just as good. a few were so horrifying, they were better, IMHO. the settings are stark, and some of the topics are disturbing, to say the least. some of the stories, particularly that of two innocent tourists who accompany some boys to a hotel room are horrifying. watkins can write characters whose personalities are as diverse as the las vegas population. i found watkins' stories tense and page-turning, and i would compare her to jon raymond, or virginia beach's mark richards. of all the modern fiction i've discovered, this collection is among the best. it's not for the faint of heart, but worth every minute of your time.

I just graduated from college with a Bachelors of Arts in Photojournalism but my minor was Creative Writing, this book was assigned for the final class of my minor "Elements of Craft" where we read different fiction novels and collections and assessed the craft of the author's work. I am not a fiction person. I will admit that immediately, but wow, I am obsessed with this book. I'm still 100 pages shy of finishing it, but so far the 5ish stories I've read have blown me away. I never knew fiction could be so good. I've been recommending this book to everyone who will listen. And so far everyone's seemed very interested in it. I've had multiple requests to borrow my book, but I'm too scared to part with it for fear I won't get it back. This one is definitely staying in my library!

Although I don't usually read short stories, I purchased this collection because I enjoyed Watkins' other book, "Gold Fame Citrus." In short: this collection is fantastic and arguably better than Gold Fame Citrus. I could try and fail to describe why the collection is so good (well written, imaginative, extremely different viewpoints and styles from story to story), but one thing I found interesting is that Watkins manages to end most of the stories on a philosophical note without seeming pretentious or preachy, which is somewhat amazing considering how often other authors try the same approach and fail.

I originally bought this on the reviews from the likes of Tom McGuane and others. Ms. Watkins was being compared to E. Annie Proulx. She is no E. Annie Proulx. Far from it.There were moments in Battleborn of very good writing. However those were as another wrote, 'Just one dark, sick story after another. Disturbing. OK, some of the stories make you think, but the thinking doesn't lead you anywhere worthwhile. I must add that after reading 4 or 5 of the stories, I chose not to subject myself to the rest.'That is absolutely what I did as well. It is very rare I do not finish a book. I almost made it but the stopped at p 261/288. I could take no more.

What a great collection of short stories. Largely set in rural Nevada and California, these stories are painful, heartbreaking, poignant and real. I have never been to the American West and this collection made it come alive for me. Trailers baking in the desert sun, whorehouses in the Las Vegas, bone dry ranches in the rural California mountains and the people who inhabit them. Good book.

I am not sure why they call this author one of the best. She relates these bizarre tales --- I am glad that I have never lived nor experienced such "living" where life is so cheap. Interesting from her point of view --- but why?
