I have read a lot of books in search of guidance on successful cider making. And I have made a few batches of passable cider, always felt they could be better, but didn't know how to improve my crafting. There are a lot of books out there worth reading, but none have put all the pieces together, until now. Jolicoeur's book is the one I have searched for all these years!The author thoroughly details the steps to making great cider--everything from selecting the right apples, handling the apples properly, to the qualities to look for in a grinder and press. There is a wealth of information here--far more than you'll need for your first batch, but plenty to reward you for re-reading, and for improving each batch of cider you make. The author's research has clearly been exhaustive and there is a lot of personal experience underpinning the advice. There is also a lot of technical information in this book, mostly in the form of fermentation chemistry, but the book is organized in such a fashion that it is easy to breeze through the chemistry and focus on the practicalities of making cider (that said, the chemistry is important and something every eager maker should work through at least once).The author's writing style is quite approachable and conversational in tone.I am really grateful for this book! It arrived as I began gathering apples for this year's pressing. On my first glance through the book the author saved me from making three mistakes that would have compromised the quality of my cider. This encouraged me to slow down and get through the book before committing any more mistakes, and now I'm confident that this year's cider will be my best ever.One final note. The author developed a series of spreadsheets for managing cider production--from calibrating your hydrometer to calculating blends and tracking fermentation progress. These sheets and their use are discussed in the book, and available for download from the publisher. The spreadsheets alone are worth the price of the book!

Certainly comprehensive -- need to know what varieties of apples to grow in your orchard to make a perfect juice for cider? Here you go! But if you're just looking for an introductory-level guide to making homemade cider, this isn't a great start. Maybe I'll be ready for this in a few years...for now, the internet gives me better / faster advice regarding simple protocols for making cider.

Beautifully laid out and photographed, this book had everything I was looking for. The main thing I wanted was an informed discussion of the pros and cons of using sulfites in cider production. This book has the most technical and thorough discussion I've seen, even though the author himself admits to only using sulfites on a small proportion of the cider he produces...Most non-UK cider discussions I've seen all take it as a given that you will put sulfites or similar chemicals in the must in order to control fermentation...This book discusses the pros and cons in a non-divisive way, and explains (the basics) of the chemistry behind the practice.If you want to build a press there is a huge section with drawings and photos. And, there is a gorgeous section on varieties of apples, again including gorgeous photos of each type covered.Lastly, the book starts with the basics of making cider, end-to-end, but the remainder of the book then goes step-by-step through all aspects of the process. Great and gorgeous book.

I was well aware of Mssr. Jolicoeur's website before he delved into writing this most excellent volume. In an area of study where most of the scientific material is difficult to access, or long out-of-print, this hefty volume brings a rare fusion of science and common sense to the Cider afficionado. For someone who merely wants to dabble in converting their local farmer's market sweet cider into something more potent, this textbook-like tome may be intimidating. That said, it neither reads like a textbook, nor does it present a difficult scientific explanation for the aspects of the cider craft. Mssr. Jolicoeur is, if anything, a very down-to-earth cider maker and cider apple orchardist. His fluid and engaging style reflects that, while his suggestions for growing, equipment and production all reflect a "best practices, without excess" approach. However the book also contains a wealth of information on specific areas that have been a deep personal interest to Mssr. Jolicoeur. To wit, there is an extensive section on making your own grinding and pressing equipment that is unsurpassed by anything online or in print - anywhere. Overall this is the best guide out there for the dedicated hobbyist and small producer.The only proviso I would attach to my otherwise complete enthusiasm for this publication is that it has a certain regional focus. As an example, for those who might be looking for advice on what apple varieties to grow in the deep south there is little contained here. Mssr. Jolicoeur is clearly an expert in his climate area, a part of Quebec that corresponds to USDA (climate/growing region) Zone 4. He has also incorporated cultural information from colleagues in the Northeastern U.S., but none any further south than USDA zone 6. So the information on apple varieties, diseases and yields observed may be of little use to growers below the northern tier (such as myself in USDA Zone 8). I would probably be better off studying with no aids than this hunk of junk. Not only are most of the answers of the practice tests wrong (IE, in the question, B is 4, in the answer it says that D is 4), some of the "expert subject reviews" are woefully inadequate. For example, the math knowledge section, which is an integral part of almost every rated section for the AFOQT, has just two paragraphs of review. One paragraph explains the importance of math for the aviation tests, and the other paragraph explains what the term "math knowledge" means and which courses (algebra and geometry) explain the required concepts.All in all, this study guide is absolute garbage and I would give 0 stars if I could. The greatest problem is that I have had it too long to return it for a refund.

This book is garbage, I don't think anyone looked at the final product before print. Some bad information and lost of grammatical errors. Most the answers for the practice test are wrong, including the answer explanations. Look else where, this book isn't worth the money.

I bought this from Barnes and Noble. I wish I hadn't. I am only halfway through the book and I swear I have found at least 20 mistakes. Not just small mistakes, but really obviously ones that a child could point out. The editor needs to be fired. I haven't taken the AFOQT yet but I'm afraid this book hasn't prepared me properly. Complete junk. Look elsewhere.

The book is flat out wrong many times throughout the book; the hidden figures answer key doesn't match the test, the concept of how a NOTAR works is used as the correct answer for "what is a fenestron", and the concept for how ailerons induce a left roll in fixed wing aircraft is completely reversed. This book is trash. Learn from my mistake and don't waste your money.

This has a lot of good challenging questions that will help you, only issue is a lot of the answers for the AFOQT practice test are incorrect. Some of the answers correspond The the question but the information will be different, especially in the Arithmetic Reasoning section. Not sure about the other tests since I didn't study those. Also wish it had at least two practice tests

This book is amazing. From the literal nuts-and-bolts that hold the Curiosity rover together, to the men and women who assembled and run it, this is the most comprehensive, yet accessible book I could imagine being written about the most complicated piece of hardware we've sent out of Earth orbit. This book is an amazing look at all, and I do mean all, of the parts and people that make this mission a continuing success. It's essentially an owner's manual for a spacecraft, yet it's somehow, strangely, a page-turner. Soaking up the minutiae of the twhack arms and getting an engineer's-eye view of the unforeseen degradation of the wheels that drive the rover across the most foreign of places we can drive something on is somehow both riveting and ponderous. I'm not quite sure how something that, on its face, is a technical, diagram-filled piece can remain utterly compelling, yet somehow this book manages that. Written in a no-nonsense, straightforward manner, reading this book takes one into the highest- and lowest-level planning sessions of some of the most important scientists running experiments off-world. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone who liked that scene in the movie Apollo 13 where they dump the stuff on the table and "figure it out" or who enjoyed "The Martian" to pick this one up and devour its depths. For anyone else interested in the science and engineering behind our most audacious space exploration, this is a must-read.

With the recent news that Curiosity has discovered some form of organic compound on Mars, it's inevitable that people are going to be asking just how it would have gone about doing so. There's going to be plenty of misinformation, uneducated speculation, and downright wrong explanations of how the rover works. Thankfully, there's a book for that.This is actually the first part of a two-volume set - a companion volume, focusing mainly on mission science, is due out next year. Even if it's only "half" a book, this is still a substantial reference work. The first chapter covers the evolution of Curiosity and the rocky road, full of budget cuts, "descopes," and launch delays that it faced in the decade prior to launch. The second chapter looks at the journey to Mars, focusing on the notoriously complex Entry, Descent, and Landing phase. The third chapter describes surface operations, including planning processes and a summary of the mission so far, while the fourth chapter covers power systems, thermal control, avionics, etc. The final four chapters, roughly half the book, describes all of the scientific, chemistry, and geological instruments, explaining the engineering design of each, how they work, some of the results obtained so far, and some of the problems they've encountered. The text is accompanied by a large number of color photographs and diagrams, annotated images of rover hardware, graphs, and summary tables.Where this book really delivers is in a superbly detailed presentation on exactly WHY MSL, for all its great cost, is such a unique, powerful, and versatile vehicle for scientific and geological studies. This isn't the kind of book that tells us how many millimeters in diameter the drill is, or what type of metal the bits are made of. Instead, Emily Lakdawalla explains how the drill is actually used, its internal arrangement, some of the anomalies encountered on Mars, and how a bit could be changed if need be. For a more complicated instrument, such as MAHLI, she describes how the camera is focused, the different imaging modes, and the use of the calibration target. The hard details, such as camera specifications, image scales, motor counts, and the dates mosaics were taken, are all included as side tables. The appendix is an extremely useful summary of the first 1,648 sols, providing information on scientific activities, drive distances, arm usage, surface temperature and pressure, and so on.I really want to give this five stars, but some publisher issues unfortunately mar it. Although Springer/Praxis has published a huge number of excellent space titles, they've always lacked somewhat in production values. The photo quality is merely decent; most of the pictures look fine, if a little soft, but quite a few are very murky or have poor contrast. The index is very skimpy, so be prepared to spend a lot of time browsing if you want to find a particular piece of data. There's also no glossary, which considering the huge number of acronyms is a frustrating omission. That aside, this an excellent book which deserves to be read by anyone who has a serious interest in the inner workings of MSL.

What I like most is its account of how key decisions were made. This had to be made smaller, or redesigned to use less power, or whatever so that something else would ALSO work. In a project this large there were inevitably many such tradeoffs. Also various unexpected issues had to be fixed, often by workarounds. Despite many challenges, they made it work and deliver a huge amount of scientific data.Lakdawalla also learned from her many conversations with the team how a number of details in the Rover as built ended up different from all previously published descriptions of it.

Magnificent!This is a fact-packed but very readable overview of the most sophisticated robotic mission flown to Mars. The Planetary Society's Emily Lakdawalla lays out in accessible detail (backed by abundant references) the evolution of the Mars Science Laboratory, the crises during its development, and how its various systems and instruments work. By drawing together in one place both the nuts and bolts, and the scientific intent, of rover operations, the book takes the reader to the red planet with explanations of everything from heat shields to image compression and chemical analysis. Especially illuminating are the discussions of issues that operators have had to work around.The book has ~200 images, carefully chosen and composed (as one might expect from Emily, a well-known image-processing maven). Particularly useful are the annotations she has added to many images to label various details. Also tremendously useful are the many tables listing such details as when different kinds of images were taken, or when short-circuits occurred, etc.If I were to have any criticism of the book, it is that the index is a little anemic. However, as a designer of mobile robotic planetary missions myself, I doubt this deficiency will be grievous, as I'll probably get to know where everything is just by regular consultation.
