I've read a lot of books on how-to-do comic art, some on writing and publishing, and this book stood out as soon as I began reading it. Last night I finished, and have to recommend this as the best book I ever read on the subject of comic book inking, and there is little need to improve over it as a feast of information. What Janson leaves out can be found in other books, but he carved the meat off the bone where others before were clawing off unappetizing chunks.Absolutely brilliant tips, tricks and approaches are found in these pages. The reviewer that calls this book 'preachy' merely is set to stumble into the holes awaiting most comic book artists on their way to mediocrity. Janson's primary lesson through every chapter is TO CONVEY INFORMATION TO THE COMIC READER. An inker clarifies and improves on the pencils, tightens them, and makes sure the storytelling in improved from pencils if not maintaining. Inside he covers light and dark, feathering, line weight, textures, and other basics that just aren't touched on in other books with the insight Klaus provides. And to help, he provides lots of lush B&W inked art from a period that probably influenced him - the Adams/Giordano/Wrightson/Kane period of DC comics. He also compared pencils to inks with more current art he inked over from Kane and Miller. While Janson's own ink style is rough and appears heavy handed, it does everything it has to with grit. Sometimes the art cries out, "USE THE CIRCLE TEMPLATE!!" but over all it demonstrates how he thinks in planning textures, placement of black and white or tone, and use of feathering to describe form. What the neo-Amero-Japo-manga artists need to learn, as does any art student going anywhere, is that art books give you information, and the more information they give you then the more their worth. Super enticing, glossy, sex bent art work should be reserved for the books people buy to enjoy the art and story, not the training manuals telling you info you use to plug into your own work. Janson hit it right on with this book, the rest is left up to you to DO and IMPROVE.Other books with good inking information - "Marvel Way" by Lee/Buscema has nice beginning info, and quick but pertinent info on weak and strong inking examples. "Rendering in Pen and Ink" by Guptill is a genius book on how to render and draw in ink for illustrators (or comic artists). "How To Draw Manga: Pen & Tone Techniques" by Ryo Touda handles a brilliant look at manga pens and tones. Everything else I fail to mention by name because it really isn't worth buying. You can put together a foundation of inking information with these 4 books that can't be beat at any art school in the nation.

Wonderful book for aspiring inkers. Covers everything from picking the right inking tools, to using different techniques, to using computer software on sketches to shade completely without ink. Very good book and worth the price. Highly recommended.

I've been reading and collecting art how-to books for decades. I got this one because I am illustrating a sports event in a comic book-page style. This is a new style for me, so I wanted some tips and got this book. Without question this is one of the best art technique books I've ever read in my life. It not only gives great explanations about technique, but also gives great advice about art in general, whatever your style.

I do recommend this book for anyone interested in comics, whether or not you're into writing, penciling, inking, coloring, or just reading. Inking, I think, is one of the most underappreciated art in comics because it really is the one of the most defining characteristics of the medium, as the book will explain. Much of the look and feel of comics is transmitted directly through the inking. The book shows, through example inked comic pages, the different effects (mood, weight, shadow, color, texture, etc.) which inking can create in a page, and generally how to go about achieving them. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because it's a bit short and I think it could've been made beneficially longer if they had added some tutorials or exercises which could help with the different techniques that are described. Especially for techniques like feathering and cross hatching for texture and shadow it would've been a bigger help to have examples or drills which the artist could perform to increase their skill. Other than that, the reading was laid back and so interesting that you'll find yourself remembering parts of this book for long after you set it down, especially if you practice your inking. Enjoy!!!!

I've read some of the other reviews on this product, and I agree that it's hard to find core rules of inking when sorting through Klaus Jansen's "preachy" style of writing. It also doesn't expand a great deal on anything that wasn't laid down already in "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" by Stan Lee. However, I would say that Klaus' experience shows through his writing. The images that he provides in the book, along with the blurbs he writes with them, are far more instructional that the main parts of the text. The main parts come off as a stream-of-consiousness that switches between the subject of inking comics and working in the industry as a whole.Long story short, it covers the basic tenets of inking, but also gives a lesson spread throughout about working in comics as a whole. I did learn some things to try in my own artwork, but nothing that changed it a great deal. Still a good reference for an aspiring comics artist like myself.

This book is ostensibly about finding jobs for people with disabilities, but it is actually a very well conceived, organized, and written textbook on the subject of job development that is useful to anyone interested in the subject. It's main point is to MEET THE EMPLOYER'S NEEDS. Don't try to sell your client on the basis of his/her needs, which is to sell charity. Rather, find out the employer's needs for skills and provide a candidate meeting those needs. That's a classic maxim from the sales profession and it is well presented here.

This book fits my professors's requirements, so I read it as needed.

This was a hard review for me to write because overall, I really did like Royal Rebel. I liked how that the main characters, Aly and Robert, were introduced in the first book in this series and that the story of Aly’s best friend, Emily, and Rob’s older brother, Kit, continued with their relationship. Robert’s twin brother, Jack, was barely mentioned which I found odd, especially since they were twins, and his sister, Jane, who will be getting her own story next.I enjoy reading books about other countries and this was set in England. I did like how the author described the scenery and life as a royal. Naturally, Rob was not only young, handsome, and a prince, he was the traditional playboy who had no real work commitments.Rob’s character was the one I liked the most. He really took a look at himself when he found the right woman (Aly), and honestly tried to be a better man.I thought Rob was handsome, witty, charming, generous, and really dedicated to his family. I liked how he always communicated honestly and open with Aly as well as his family. He looked to them for guidance and when the truth was told about a personal family mater that molded his views on relationships, he worked to change that. He was very thoughtful to Aly and even though he previously stated he couldn’t be in a committed relationship (not that he didn’t want to be), his actions spoke volumes. He was very thoughtful and would overhear or notice things she liked or wanted to do and made them happen. His character progressed and grew throughout the entire book. Even though he was a prince, he personally cleaned up throw–up (this was gross), he was not with other woman, and he made Aly feel special, appreciated, wanted, and desired. I did believe in their chemistry and their attraction to one another, and that it was more than skin deep. I especially liked their emails back and forth to each other. My only fault in the book, and this is only my opinion as to where is fell short, was with Aly. I did like many things about her especially her friendship with Emily, her work smarts and work ethic, and her vision of what she wanted in life. Her feelings on this changed rather abruptly (one minute she is ok with just hooking up with Robert, then she wanted more, then it had to be marriage with babies and a Volvo or nothing, and she only knew him a few months.) I do think it would have been helpful to include more information of their beginning; the book starts mostly in the middle of their relationship. They were on again and off again for most of the book, but one night they decided to give it a try, be exclusive, and go on a real date. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, because what happens next is important to the author telling the story as she sees it, but that is when I thought Aly made a wrong decision. She just dropped him cold because he assumed something and said the wrong things. What about all the right things he said and did? He even took on a full-time job at his family’s foundation because he wanted to, not because he was required. If you read this book, Aly basically didn’t do any thing nice for him personally other than to be intimate with him. He planned trips on a boat, took her to a museum, noticed a dress she was admiring and surprised her, planned the party along with her, etc. He really tried. He would complement her often too. I would have liked to see her plan a picnic, or even make him dinner one night. I realize that wasn’t originally what their relationship was about (they weren’t suppose to talk or kiss on the lips), but as they grew more fond of each other, I would have liked to have seen it not so one-sided and for her to not be so demanding and self-righteous.There were a lot of good moments in this book. She did speak to him as a person and not a prince, and let him know he was a good man, etc. He confided in her about his family and she was very supportive and encouraging, said all the right things…but he was trying, making all the improvements, and she kept wanting more. That is what dating is for, to really get to know one another and see if there is a future. They didn’t even have an official date yet when she ended things, and I wish she would have said, “What you said is wrong on so many levels, but you did take a red eye and flew all the way from Miami to London to see me and you look exhausted. Go to bed and get some rest and we’ll talk about this in the morning.”It was so sad how he was respecting her wishes and stayed away even though it was breaking his heart. She finally realizes she misses him and that he was the one, but she never apologized to him, even though he apologized to her. I would have liked that, because she obviously hurt him, too, and forgiveness is key to any successful relationship. The book does end with a happy ending and I am glad they were able to work things out because I did believe in their relationship, their emotional and physical connection, and that they were meant to be.

Ahhh!! I've been so excited for Aly and Rob's story since I read Kit and Emily's. I was not disappointed! Aly and Rob have been hooking up for the past few months. Aly decides she wants her happily ever after, and starts searching for it elsewhere. Rob is our royal rebel, manwhore extraordinaire, carefree prince. Yet he hides a lot behind his cockiness and flirtatious behavior. Aly and Rob completely get each other. They see in each other what they are hiding. All their fears, disappointments, and dreams. I love them together so much.Once again Jessica Peterson makes us feel like princesses all throughout the story. The writing kept me glued to the pages. The characters and banter had me laughing and swooning. The sex was spectacularly hot. Rob is every bit of a sexy prince. Aly is every bit of a sassy, blunt American. Royal books are pretty hit and miss for me, Royal Rebel is a definite hit and I can't wait for more of this family. I'm so hooked on this series that it makes me want to go and find a prince of my own! I loved seeing more of Kit and Emily! I also can't wait for Jane's book! I'm just all around excited to read more from this author!

Royal Rebel has all the heat and passion I love in an enemies to lovers romance. There is witty banter, humor, tenderness, and heat packed into this unexpected love story. Jessica Peterson thoroughly fleshes out her characters in a way that enchants the reader. Her words are thought provoking and genuine. As a reader, I empathized and recognized parts of myself in each of her characters. This is a love story that speaks to romantic love as well as, self awareness and acceptance. Learn to embrace who you are and adapt to life's unexpected gifts.Robert is sexy and cocky. He has the goods and knows how to use them. The press labels him a playboy and he embraces the facade with gusto. There is so much more to Rob than his handsome exterior. He is intelligent, loyal, observant, empathetic, and funny.Aly is intelligent, savvy, hardworking, and focused. She has goals and aspirations, that happen to include finding "the one." In her mind a partner should be dependable, attentive and kind. None of these things scream Rob....at least not at first. The chemistry and sex between Rob and Aly is sweltering. It will leave you drenched in desire. The passion is intensified by the physical and emotional connection between these two. Royal Rebel is a sincere, enticing, sexy and intoxicating read.

I have been a big Jessica Peterson since I read her first book. She writes strong heroines and guys that are totally swoony, but yet have a vulnerability about them.Prince Rob is exactly that. He is a panty-dropping prince who has Aly all tied up with her thoughts and feelings. She knows he doesn't want more like she does, but yet, she can't find that white-hot chemistry with anyone else. Rob realizes that perhaps he has been holding on to the wrong thing all along and maybe Aly is his future.I loved the banter between them as they started out as enemies, but quickly morphed to so much more. The writing was great and this royal bunch is a lot of fun. I enjoy Ms. Peterson's writing and love her story telling. My only comment would be that some of the chapters span months of the characters not talking....I'm always curious as to what transpires in that time apart.I love this family and these characters and I'm so excited to continue on this journey with this family!

Cormac Culligan has written exactly what the title suggests. Here is education contained nowhere else.Highly recommended

Having an acute interest in climate change, I found Cormac Cullinan's thoughts helped me better understand the importance each of us have in caring for the earth, or at least doing what we can to keep it in a state suitable for human habitation.

I have always loved nature. I consider myself a deep thinker and very ethical. Cormac taught me much! I love his applications of systems thinking and I love his heart. This is a must read if you care for the Earth!!!

"Wild Law: A Manifesto for Earth Justice" is a call for the next evolution of modern civilization. Some criticism of this book has centered on the practical application of what this book calls for - I didn't read it as a manifesto of practical change, but instead as a manifesto of philosophical change. Humans, whether we want to admit to it or not, are an integral part of the world's ecosystem; we cannot disconnect ourselves from it through scripture or cybernetics... no matter what we do to ourselves - our bodies, our brains, our religions, our civilizations - we will still be a part of the whole. Some would call this the Gaia theory, but to me it is just obvious, common sense. If you kill the predators in an ecosystem, the ecosystem will change; if you alter how we do something, it will change the ecosystem. Everything is connected to some degree or another. What "Wild Law" proposes is that we alter our laws - our very civil structure - to take into account that we are a part of the greater system, and what we do affects that system. Unless we blow the atmosphere off this planet, whether humans are here or not and whether this planet can support human life or not, history has shown that some form of life will likely continue on planet Earth. If we can evolve our civilization to live more in sync with our planet, its ecosystem, and every other living thing, we can enhance our chances of continuing to be a part of that system.A Guide to my Book Rating System:1 star = The wood pulp would have been better utilized as toilet paper.2 stars = Don't bother, clean your bathroom instead.3 stars = Wasn't a waste of time, but it was time wasted.4 stars = Good book, but not life altering.5 stars = This book changed my world in at least some small way.

I deem it appropriate that Cormac Cullinan raises the central issue confronting humanity in the central pages of "Wild Law." In Chapter 8 ("The Question of Rights"), the fundamental Earth right of a river is considered. Human activities that constrain the river's right to flow must be prohibited and the river given precedence throughout its customary floodplain. The assertion by some reviewers that Earth jurisprudence, in recognizing Earth rights of non-human entities, is a radical concept simplistically embraces the loss of lives, belongings, and homes of flood victims. According rivers their Earth right to flood is a beautifully conservative concept, as is according aardvarks their right to dig, and wolves their right to live on our public lands free of harassment. Earth jurisprudence, the "Wild Law" championed by Cullinan, accords rights to every natural entity by restraining those of every other entity. Far from being a radical notion, we find it embodied in a familiar document according a people "the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them..." As Cullinan states, "...a flooding river is almost certainly acting in accordance with its nature." Written in a conversational style, the book is redundant, and I resented being reminded of what I had read in preceding chapters and told of what I would be reading subsequently. While it may have been better written, "Wild Law" could not convey a more essential nor imperative message.

For all the right reasons, Cormac Cullinan is critical of the state of industrial civilization and he doesn't like its effects on our planet. He passionate for the Earth, which he sees as a whole system, a Gaia. He is at times mystical, with a romantic view of indigenous peoples and their beliefs. His ultimate goal is a new system of Earth governance, with law as the lever. Unfortunately, his justifications for such a transformation are mostly lacking. For example, one might ask why is law the best way to achieve a better relationship between humans and nature? One might consider the ideas of other disciplines as a contrast. Just taking political science, sociology, and economics, to what extent would political reform, environmental social movements or more environmentally-grounded property rights work better or worse than wild law? That's not to advocate any of those, just to say that he needs to take on some alternatives to make his own case.On this and many other points, Cullinan lacks follow through. For example, he makes a nice point that corporations are a legal fiction that society created to serve particular purposes, so one might just as easily give nature fictive rights - - the right of a river to be a river, the right of a species to exist, the right of natural processes in an ecosystem to continue to function. That's a good enough idea to fill a book, working through the details of how to set up legal rights, and how to resolve conflicts with other rights such as human needs. Unfortunately, Cullinan tosses out the idea and then moves to something else. All in all, Cullinan is much better calling us to think about an issue than he is at thinking about the issue himself.

Every year at the Springtime Jamboree there's a competition. And every year Hazard Hare comes in first. And every year Shelly the Tortoise comes in last. But this year's competition is a robot battle and Shelly is a tech wizard while Hazard Hare is lazy. She is sure that slow and steady work will win her this battle finally.A very fun modern take on the classic fable. I like the robot battle adaptation to make this more a battle of wits than even the original. A quick and fun read for techy kids and reluctant middle grade readers. Also a fun story to include in a fables unit.Notes on content: Nothing hurt except some robots.

Son loves it -- one of his favorites.

I never put spoilers in my reviews.Master Storytellers. There are many new and old authors trying their hand at this fascinating, fairly new, genre. Most never get it. Their imagination, and sometimes talent (no disrespect, authoring is hard work- you have my admiration,) just don't reach far enough. Ilona Andrews has the talent, imagination and that little extra that turns a story into magic.Read any of their books, enjoy the ride.

Heckfire!!! What did I just read? I never saw any of this coming, not even a little bit. And yet? It made complete sense too. This is book 9 in the Kate Daniels series, and be ready for it, because I am going to gush and spoilers for earlier in the series may occur and if you haven't read the series it is going to be pure gibberish (it's book 9, what do you expect?). Kate Daniels rocks out with her socks out...or on as the case may be...in a tutu. We've seen Kate grow from a low-lying no-name merc, to a POWER. She's made friends and enemies. Just, aargh, I don't even know how to express all the things that make me love this series. But I love it so. The night I was reading it someone asked me what I was reading and I TRIED to explain it. But trying to express into words what makes me so enthralled with this series proved pretty much impossible and devolved into something that probably resembled the kind of embarrassing spectacle that was once associated with Bieber fans. My love for this series is vast, I walk in this world in my head and it is a mythology that makes sense to me.So this book in particular? Leading up to it we have seen how the structure of the people in Kate's life have shifted, it was moving toward something. But that structure is pretty effing clear now. War is coming and alliances are and will be tested.Christopher, the broken man, the apparent deus ex machina that I thought was there to show who Kate really was, to set her apart from her father, yeah, he turned out to be pretty ever-loving important. He hurts my heart, but I think he's going to get better now. And I can't wait to see how his story shakes out.Roman the Dark Vohlv is freaking adorable. Just the cutest little Dark Vohlv ever, and as the representative that your job doesn't have to define you, he's pretty perfect and I want a HEA there quite badly.Jim, the new Beast Lord, yeah he done screwed up. Fortunately Dali is a magnificent Beast Lady who is perfectly willing to call him on whatever he needs calling on. She is just as good of a Beast Lady as I knew she would be. I expect Jim will have some consequences, as he well deserves. But I expect we'll see that shake out in the next book. And of course Ghastek , Master of the Dead, came through, I've always liked him. I'd like to see his story play out too. We don't necessarily need a whole book, but a little more wouldn't go amiss. We also got quite a bit of back story on everyone. Roland, Era, Hugh. Lots of emotions to be wrong there. And the rest of the gang; Andrea, Raphael, Desandra, Derek, Ascanio, Samhain, everyone made an appearance and played their parts. And I guess that pretty much shows if not explains why I love this series. These characters are as real to me as anyone else. The world is built and layered so I believe it too, so the characters they've created can walk there and I can believe in them and feel like I know them too.As for the events, this is very much a learning book, more so than an action book. But is still felt really exciting. So yeah, we tromp through Kate's past and her future, and Kate learns a heck of a lot, but it still felt like there was a lot going on and that there were some real stakes. And there was a wedding. I don't know, it came down fairly easy and then hooked for the next (last?) book. Good stuff, all the stars, 10/10 would read again, recommend this series to everyone and all that jazz.

Magic Binds, the ninth (and apparently second-to-last) installment of Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series is quite possibly this author’s best work to date. At this point, it’s very difficult to separate, compare or evaluate each individual book, but Magic Binds challenges our beloved characters in all new ways and adds a lot to the already spectacular characterization. The sheer quality of these books sets them apart from anything even remotely similar.Kate is pushed to her limits in Magic Binds, not just by her father, but by her magic as well. More than any other book in the series, this one centers on characterization and shades of gray within Kate’s family. With her father so close, a constant threat on the borders of Atlanta, Kate’s power is developing rapidly. Each day she discovers some new ability and it’s affecting her in ways none of us could have predicted. As Curran at one point says, Kate is the least power-hungry person he knows, but power corrupts even if you never wanted it in the first place. For those of you who were wondering about Christopher and his origins, answers are finally here! We get to learn his history, how his mind came to be broken and why he attached himself to Kate and her people. Aside from discovering his past, we finally scratch the surface of his relationship with Barabas, which seems to be very complex. This was something I’ve been wondering about for quite a while and although there’s still some room for speculation, we now have a much clearer picture. As the end approaches, the pressure on Kate is growing, the need to fight her own blood inside and out is becoming ever stronger. Everything she does reveals more truths about her father and the more she knows, the more she’s determined to stop him. Kate’s family is always behind her, even though there are friends who aren’t. It’s gorgeous to see how much understanding there is between her and Curran and how they support each other even through bold and risky moves. With just one more book left, every word in Magic Binds is extremely important. Each event leads to something bigger and more dangerous. Due to their trademark sense of humor, fantastic plotting and unparalleled action scenes, Ilona and Gordon will leave behind a horde of disappointed fans when they bring this series to a close.
