An absolute total refutation of "Faith Alone" I read James white's book "The God Who Justifies" along with this book. It was an absolute no contest. Dr. Sungenis covers EVERYTHING in scripture about salvation. White's book basically only covers Romans, Galatians, Ephesians and James. If you really want to see what I mean read White's book's chapter on James 2 which states: "Man is justified by works and not by faith alone" and you'll see him twist and contort scripture to try to fit his false theology.

Born & raised a Protestant I was interested in the Catholic view of Justification. This book was instrumental in causing me to start examining the claims of the Catholic church and overcome my anti-Catholic fundamentalism I was born & raised in.I will be welcomed home Easter Vigil 2019.

Sungennis gives the "big picture" of the Catholic doctrine on justification. One minute apologetics and short internet articles can only accomplish so much and often fail to get to the underlying issues. Sungennis, a former Calvinist, puts what appears to be a whole lifetime worth of scholarly thought and research into this book. Although the subject of how one is justified could probably never be completely exhausted, Sungennis has a good go at it.In the first three chapters, Sungennis looks at Catholic soteriology in light of the teachings of Paul, James, and Jesus. He presents and analyzes countless passages that vouch for Catholic teaching and looks at passages that Protestants say teach faith alone theology. He critiques many protestant arguments and builds an impressive case for the Catholic view on how works fit into our salvation. Interspersed throughout the book is a discussion on how many famous Old Testament figures were justified. He spends considerable time on Paul and James' commentary on these Old Testament characters of which Abraham is most often discussed. He really helped the story of Abraham come to life for me, and actually gave me a greater appreciation of God's plan for us and the heroism of Abraham.Of the arguments he employs throughout the book, much of them hit the nail right on the head and, even though I'm a Catholic and certainly have my biases, I think would be very difficult to refute. At other times with certain difficult scripture verses or arguments taken in isolation, he adequately explains how the Catholic interpretation fits into the verse without completely shutting the door on alternative interpretations. In these situations, he tries to bring in both the immediate and larger context that the verse is set in. Ultimately, throughout the book he relentlessly brings torrents of scriptural evidence proving different facets of the Catholic teaching and thus, after seeing the big picture, I think the reader might by willing to believe Sungennis's interpretations of these "toss-up" verses.In the next chapters he explains different facets of the Catholic teaching on justification. Namely, that justification is a process (not a one time event), a familial restoration (not a courtroom acquittal), and an infusion of grace (not a mere forensic covering). In these chapters, I was really able to see how it all fits together in Catholic theology.Considering the difficulty of the topic of predestination, he does a good job setting up the parameters of what the Church teaches on predestination and free will, while critiquing the reformers' various views. This chapter segues into the chapter where he looks at many different personalities of the reformation and, very intentionally, points out some of their more extreme views (with plenty of footnotes) and shows the disharmony and infighting that plagued them as they struggled to work through the details of their theology. Sungennis stated that (I'm paraphrasing) it was his goal that as Protestants see the discord of the reformation that they might take a second look at what they believe.Aside from a few nitpicky things not worth mentioning, I thought that one thing that would have improved the book is a longer discussion on the theology of the cross and a comparison between Catholic and Protestant views on just exactly what the death and resurrection of Christ accomplished. He spends some time on this, but I could have used more - maybe ten to fifteen pages would have been nice.I highly recommend this book to all Christians. It's long but it's well worth spending a little time on this subject and getting it right. I think that all but the most ardent Protestants will find this book convincing, and at the very least will have a new found respect for the Catholic teaching.

Quite an eye opener. The discussion of Paul's concept of faith and good works was illuminating and totally different that I had been taught previously. This was especially evident in his discussion of the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. His section of the role of the Commandments should have been obvious to me, but wasn't. It is quite a theological work!

I am not sure if Robert Sungenis would appreciate a positive review of his work on Justification, *Not by Faith Alone* from an active, practicing member of the LDS Church ("Mormonism"), but here goes--this volume is a wonderful resource for those interested in Justification and important issues relating to the debate, both historically and in modern times.With careful rigour, Sungenis refutes the long-standing arguments of Protestant, especially Reformed, theologians and apologists, such as Calvin, Luther, Sproul, White, Zins et al., demonstrating that (1) the Bible does not support the concept of Justification being an external, once-for-all event; (2) that the concept of alien imputed righteousness is foreign to the biblical texts; (3) in some way (though not in a legalistic manner), works do indeed justify, as seen in the case of Phinehas in Ps 106 (cf. Num 25) and both Abraham and Rahab (cf. James 2 [Sungenis also refutes the argument that the noun form of the verb dikaioO in James 2 refers to vindication, not salvific justification) and that the judgment according to one's works in New Testament passages are not merely about rewards in the life to come, but also scenes that determine where one will spend eternity, among many other issues.This is a wonderful volume, and one would do well to study it. Do note, however, that Sungenis does not deal in great detail with the New Perspective on Paul, a movement that refutes the historical Protestant interpretation (read: eisegesis) of Paul, so one should look elsewhere for the NPP (see the works of NT Wright; Dunn and others on this issue). However, notwithstanding this, do buy this book!Alongside this volume, I do suggest Chris Vanlandingham's 2006 book published by Hendrickson, "Judgment and Justification in Early Judaism and the Apostle Paul."

The Harbinger brings forth non-fiction revelations through a narrative. The word Shemitah refers to Sabbath year observed in ancient Israel, when all working of the land ceased, the land rested. This took place every seventh year. On the last day of that year, all debts were wiped away, all credit was nullified, the financial accounts of the nation were, in effect, wiped clean.Later on, in Israel’s history, as the nation turned away from God, the Shemitah became a sign and manifestation of judgment, the kingdom’s destruction in 586 B.C. and its exile in Babylon were timed to the years of the Shemitah.Most people had never heard of the “shemitah” before The Harbinger came out. One of its fourteen mysteries was that of the Shemitah. That was the beginning of the mystery. In a section entitled The Key of Cataclysms, the author, Jonathan Cahn, puts forth the proposition that this ancient mystery actually lies behind the rise and fall of the stock market, the booms and collapses of the American and world economy, and the greatest collapses and crashes in Wall Street and world history.The proposition would sound outrageous except that Cahn demonstrates the reality of it by going through the greatest financial and economic collapses of modern times. The correspondence of these collapses to the year of the Shemitah is stunning. The number of crashes which match up with this ancient phenomenon is quite amazing. Even the connection to the specific time of the year when, according to the ancient mystery, financial accounts were wiped clean shows up eerily in the history of Wall Street collapses. In a section entitled The Mystery of the Towers, Cahn opens up another mystery that links the rise of powers, nations, to the rising of towers – Even the fall of nations to the fall of towers. I won’t fill in the dots or spoil it, except to say that part of the mystery converges on 9/11. And this too is linked to the Shemitah as Cahn reveals that in Hebrew, the word can also mean, ‘the shaking,’ ‘the fall,’ and ‘the collapse.’And the mystery doesn't stop there as well, but continues to increase in size and scope. In a section called The Rise and Fall of Nations, Cahn opens up the connection between the ancient mystery and some of the most pivotal events of modern times – how the ancient Shemitah pinpoints the rise of America as a superpower, the fall of empires, two world wars, the rise of the Third Reich, the Soviet Union, the Cold War, the fall of Vietnam, to the day America was attacked on its own shores. etc. The scale and scope of the mystery goes far beyond the economic or financial realms, and even determines the political realm, the military realm – even ushering in the atomic age. The mystery also reveals a warning concerning the fall of America, and the end of the American age.One cannot read the book without wondering about what the future holds, in view of the coming Shemitah, and the time beyond that. To address this is a section called That Which Lies Ahead. In it, Cahn deals with what the phenomenon means for the future of the economic and financial realms, America, and the world. He points to several factors converging into what one can only take as a strong warning of a coming calamity, to affect America and the world. At the end of this section the mystery is taken to its ultimate level.This section includes specific dates concerning the future. At the same time, Cahn is cautious in the area of date-setting. In contrast to the observance of the Shemitah, the phenomenon of the Shemitah is not a routine calendar event that must show up on a regular schedule. Rather, given the right circumstances, its mystery manifests and often does so in epic and world-changing proportions. Given this caution, Cahn presents several specific scenarios as to what could happen and then a prophetic warning concerning what he believes will happen regardless of the time table.And yet this is still not the end. As if there was too much to put into one book, the Epilogue contains two more mysteries. Both focus entirely on the future. This is an awesome book. Although I will admit I was overwhelmed at the beginning. I have the audio version, there was so much information and my mind could not process it all. I decided to just listen and not try to figure it out. I made it thru the book and will be listening to it again. First of all remember we are from the western world and scientist mind set. The customs and things of the eastern world don't make sense to us. Set aside your western thinking and listen or read and you will be surprised how much information you will grasp. I don't understand it all and that's ok because when all is said and done the bottom line is this. God has a plan we need to be obedient and do our part in His plan. If you don't know what your part is ask Him He will tell you. God is a very personal God. He sees you where you are knows you better than you know yourself. And "He knew exactly what He was getting into when He called you and He called you anyway" (words from a song by Misty Edwards) you are loved you are beautiful you are a gift from God His own creation. You're a gift to everyone His gift of love to them. You are loved and God danced the day you were born!

Jonathan Cahn has once again put together a publication that will not disappoint. Building off of his previous book, “The Harbinger” he now takes it to a more pressing conclusion. In my opinion, he shows that God not only works in our lives in a day to day basis, but also adheres to a hepatic, 7 year pattern that He set forth in the Torah when it comes to national blessings and judgments.It was interesting to see how so many history changing events took place around the Shemitah in the last 100 years. My only concern with his analysis is that he uses statistics to show God’s hand at work – and I always pay special attention when authors do this because it means that data can be manipulated to prove a conclusion that might not necessarily be there. However, I came to my own conclusion that his analysis is sound, noting that his comparisons were very similar and the percentages overwhelming.The areas I was glad to see him cover were:His analysis of previous Shemitahs and their consequences …The meaning of towers in a nations standing with God and their implications …The rising of the One World Trade Center …The Isaiah 9:10 quotation in the Septuagint …The Blood Moon Tetrad phenomenon …The year of Jubilee and the history of Israel …That he mentions the upcoming Shemitah (and possibly year of Jubilee ) is not a calamity set in stone, but needs close attention paid to it …In conclusion, I would highly recommend reading this book. If we truly want to adhere to the command Jesus gave us during the Olivet Discourse in Luke 21:36 to “Watch ye therefore and pray always . . .”, this is certainly one way to accomplish it.

This is absolutely the perfect gift for a newly pregnant friend or family member! I remember being terrified by the clinical feeling of all the things that could go wrong thanks to books like "What to Expect When Expecting" - but this book keeps it easy going and helps to ease that constant feeling of worry! It's fun (seriously, everyone should know about the padscicle before they are frantically googling for relief!) but also bursting with real down to earth information from multiple resources! It will empower you to handle those comments from strangers and unsolicited advice as well as figuring out what your goals are for your pregnancy, delivery, and marriage during this chapter of your life. Jill Krause did an outstanding job on this adorable book - it's a must have to treat yourself or your pregnant loved one with!

I love logic and organization, so the idea of a checklist for my first pregnancy sounded absolutely perfect. I couldn't even make it through the first third of this book before returning it in disgust. Given this, I can only speak for the first bit, but that was all feel-good generalized junk. Also, as a medical practitioner, I was disturbed at the advice that obese women should find an OB who says weight is not at all a risk in pregnancy -- it absolutely is and finding someone who will lie to you about that is positively foolish.

This is an adorable book full of great advice. I wish it had existed when I was a first-time mom, since the casual, chatty tone is a much more helpful tactic than the scary, worst-case-scenario advice in many pregnancy books. When you're pregnant, so much is out of your control that having a list of 50 things you can do, plan, or think about is a great way to feel like you're on top of everything. Put this book on your registry or give it to the new mom you know!

This book provided some generic information that was good to know but it was all very top level. It would raise an issue as something to look into but then tell you nothing further. If you really want answers, facts, statistics, etc., do NOT go with this book.

Amy Herzog is such a fantastic writer, the subject matter is tough stuff and she handles it with great care. Every character is tightly drawn, every word is important.

Intriguing tension that remains tantalizingly unresolved.

The story was decent, and well-written but the ending killed it for me. There are good open endings and bad open endings. This was a bad open ending. There wasn't enough closure to the story for me. And the elements at the very end felt a little forced. Some people may really like the way it ends, but I found it frustrating. The open endings of plays like, "Oleanna" or "Doubt" were done in a way where you walked away really thinking things through and weighing things out... having meaningful discussions with others after seeing it. The ending with this show was just frustrating and disappointing after really enjoying where the story was going up until that point.

Enjoyed it, but something is missing from the whole. I think it comes from the lack of character development in the supporting characters of Paige, Frank, and the parents.

I liked everything. It took my breath away. This was the first time in my life that I really felt alive.
