These are very different urban situations, with one struggling from a lack of capital, while the other is being forever changed by a "wave of capital". As someone who sees neo-liberal policies and urban development generally as a good thing, this book helped broaden my perspective.The book is written as a panacea for all urban areas, and the author seems to assume that everyone will share his view. It's important to remember that every housing market is different.I recommend this book, but I encourage readers to go deeper and read alternative views like Richard Florida.

The book does a good job of putting words around the complicated feelings and impact of gentrification. Though slightly repetitive at times, the case studies cited are good examples of the drivers of gentrification, as well as the impact on local residents. The five page scathing critique of suburbs is worth the price of the book. If you care about learning about the tangible effects of the US’s decades long history of racist housing policy and rising income inequality, then this book is a must read.

Last year on a cable channel EPIX, they had a series called America Divided and a segment was done on the housing crisis in New York. I believe this book is a continuation of sorts on that series. Case in point: a woman lived in an apartment building that was being renovated all around her. The only thing between a young man operating a jack hammer and her wall was a sheet of plastic. I could not believe my eyes. She had to put up with the incredible noise and dust swirling all around her. The landlord wanted her out and in spite of her living there, he was determined to get rid of her and her grandson one way or another. Since then I have seen gentrification begin right In my own small city and luxury apartments are being built but no low income dwellings are even considered. Recently in my city in Central Florida someone posted a picture taken of a bald eagle family gazing at the destruction of their homestead. Their nest was probably among the trees that were being destroyed to make way for yet another business or growth proposal. A few years ago a protest was held in an area near downtown Orlando where the people chanted "where are we supposed to go". Gone are the neighborhoods that I remember where everything you needed was almost within walking distance If not, a short bus trip would take you there. I guess money is more important than community. But where will it end? The middle class is virtually being destroyed daily and a luxury apartment is just that - a luxury few will be able to afford. We will be left with quiet enclaves where there will be designer shops, quaint coffee houses and nothing else. No kids in the streets, no neighborhoods, just playgrounds for the rich. Meanwhile the poor are thrust further and further into the suburbs with limited services. I read in scripture that Jesus said the poor will always be among us, but He didn't mean that we are to abandon them and we all will be judged for it. I don't want to hear Him say I put the interest of the rich before those who need our help. I am sure He won't be pleased. The future looks grim.

Very informative book but gave little hope for ways to afford change. It did help me recognize the progress our city is making toward these results which is quite discouraging. If you're want to learn the practices cities create and support that causes the death of the historic cultures of large cities, this is your book. We read this as a neighborhood group and it was a great springboard for education and information.

Excellent book! For anyone who wants to hear about the ups and downs on gentrification. The book also gives a history on the idea, what its goals actually are, how some see the good and some see the bad, stats and allows you to come to your own conclusion

We use these as a basic framework for our homeschooling lessons. We've never been disappointed. They're a great way to make sure that something your kid should have as sort of baseline knowledge isn't slipping through the cracks. This one is no exception. They're palatable to read straight and also easy to adapt into more elaborate lessons. I highly recommend them.

What your 5th/6th grader needs to know books helped me pass my MTEL (MA teacher's elementary general curriculum test) on the first try. I had graduated college 20 years prior to taking the mtels so these books are good refreshers. It doesn't go into deep details however it was easy enough to google any subject mentioned in the book to expand my knowlege. Many of the answers to test questions are found in these books. Also, if you are getting these books as an mtel prep then also get a $39 (or so, no need for the more expensive ones) mtel gen curriculum study guide which supplements these books and sometimes gives me details. For example, the 5th grade book mentions tensions leading up to the Civil War but doesn't mention the Nebraska Kentucky Act but the guide does...the mtels includes obsure knowledge to all extra info is needed. To pass MTELs you need a thorough understanding of the topic objectives and be apply your knowlege to answer the questions so the more guides the better.

I bought this book along with the 6th grade version of this series to study for my CSET. In my other review, I stated that it has a ton of information that is useful for both parents and teachers, as well as students for this grade level. It gives great information that is easy to understand. This book is amazing and I love the quality of the pages! It's definitely worth the price. I love it and would recommend it to anyone that's studying for the CSET, or if you just want to catch up your students/children on fifth grade topics!

Not what I expected - should have looked at the dimensions. The pics are neat but not what I had in mind. Paper is too slick.

I actually decided to buy this instead of a wall calendar this year since I realized wall calendars are basically posters that I get to change out every month. (I want to note that I do buy several wall calendars every year and greatly appreciate companies that still make them. I find wall and engagement calendars to be much better than calendar apps...I think calendar apps lead to lack of communication about schedules.) This calendar is great, as Anne Taintor stuff always is. Very funny stuff. The only reason I took off a star is the size. I used to buy these calendars all the time when I worked as an office manager. I'm glad I don't need to keep track of much information in this because it's tiny. Practically pocketbook size. Unfortunately I suspect electric calendars are ruining paper calendars for those of us who still love them.

I love the Anne Taintor product line and the weekly 2019 Engagement Calendar is a good as prior editions! I purchased a Taintor card years ago and have been an avid fan since. The witty phrases and corresponding pictures of old-fashioned fifties-ish house-wifey models make this a great reason to start one's day! From "Excuse me...? We're looking for that village where people help you raise your children? to was she in love or was it just allergies? the comical statements just keep coming just like the next day. I truly recommend this calendar for those who love the days of I Love Lucy and Roseanne.

I buy these every year and use them as my planner. Love the humor.

Bought this for my mom to start her new job. She absolutely loved it. Quality is clear, not too big but not too small, and arrived fast and in perfect condition. Great gift for the women in your life! (or men too, whatever!)

I love these calendars , i’ve Used them now for at least 3/4 years. I use my tech versions of datebooks on my phone etc but still old school and want a hard copy. These are a good size, just enough room to write each day and the added benefit of making me smile and remember to not take things too seriously.

We listen to a lot of books on tape, and for years my kids have listened to Patch the Pirate. As they grow into their teen years, though, we began searching for something more and I found these. My kids all love listening to them, and I do as well. They can be a bit cheesy at times, but I love all of the science thrown in to teach about Creation Science along with the Gospel. My only complaint is that each disc comes with 3 'episodes,' and so far, each story line is 2 episodes long, so the 3rd track on the CD leaves you hanging, and if you didn't purchase more than one, you won't be able to finish the story. I would've paid a little more for 1 CD with 2 full stories on it, I think. But if you buy a full series at once, you can just pop the next CD in and you're good to go!My only caution is that the characters do often find themselves in some precarious positions with some nefarious foes, very small children may find them a bit scary until they are a little older.

My kiddos love it. We didn't know what an audio adventure was before we purchased, so we were a bit skeptical. We let our kids listen to the trailer on the jonathanpark.com website and they were excited about it so we thought we would give it a try. We'll when we received the album it didn't disappoint. First off, the quality the packaging really impressed us. We're used to seeing Christian products miss the mark on presentation, but these guys have really impressed us. As far as the production quality goes, we were really impressed as well. The music, sound effects, and acting was excellent. We don't have much to compare it to, but my wife and I both agreed it was better than we expected. What we liked the most was how the stories incorporate Scripture and science into a compelling story line. The kids loved the action and the funny characters. They actually do a pretty good job with humor as well. make sure you read carefully. This not the whole set just one CD so it leaves you hanging. Was disappointed because my boys bought it with their own money. Am planning of getting them the other ones. Other then that they are a great series.

We have mostly Adventures in Odyessey audio sets and love them! We thought we would try this. It is a little pricey for what you get. It also leaves you on a cliffhanger....so it's ONE CD and a few stories that I do not consider a good value PLUS they leave you in the middle of a story. My children were greatly disappointed in this purcahse and we will not buy the next one to figure out the ending . The quality is not great either....not professionallly done, in my opinion.

These stories are good quality audio books. They are audio books not audio dramas.

We love this series! Great Creation science learning and adventure, that my kids (3-8yrs of age) all enjoy.

Some of the authors personal anecdotes about those he met & travelled with on this quest that lent nothing to our understanding of the Lemba or Venda cultures except post colonial bias could have been left out however: with that said I do value the authors valuable offerings of gold dust amidst the absence of substantive , accurate historical knowledge.

For a scholar, it was dissapointing. I wanted to know where the Ark went, not all the places the author drank whisky or the clever ways he could insult people. He brought up interesting facts, but didn't contact them well.

It was fun following Tudor Parfitt on his wander through northern Africa and Israel.No observable conclusion, but a great trip.

A fascinating real life quest for the answer to an age old question.

I wanted to know more than just this man's OPINIONS! He has led us on a goose chase just to sell a book!very disappointed!

Tudor Parfitt's account of his search for the lost Ark of the Covenant is brilliant. Never mind that it's based on a myth - all our civilizations are based on foundational myths. His interactions with those he met are compelling and offer to many of us a glimpse of people and cultures we're not likely to have the opportunity to meet ourselves. If you are looking for an authoritative and informative book on the Ark of the Covenant, my advice is for you to keep looking and pass this one by. If however, you are looking for information about the lost decendents of ancient Isreal, this is for you. I also get the distinct impression that Mr. Parfitt is one of those types that only looks for those facts that fit his particular theories. I can't quite buy into them. Mainly because he doesn't seem to have any respect for anyone's religous beliefs and constanly refers to them as "cults". He doesn't believe that the ancient Isrealites had the tools, material or ability to construct a gold covered ark, even though they were the artisans and craftsmen of Eygpt and had all of the spoils of Eygpt with them. Doesn't seem to bother him that they made a golden calf to worship though. Wonder how they did that? He discounts all the testomony of the power and presence of God and replaces it with a crude wooden drum and theories of gunpowder or some other inflammable material. If you are interested in the history of the Lemba, by all means buy this book. It has some interesting parts, but nothing that I would consider relevant to the present whereabouts of the Lost Ark of the Covenant.
